Fedcap Camp Counselor in Albany, New York

We are hiring in Cohoes NY! Join us this summer at Camp Colonie for an exciting opportunity as a Camp Counselor.

Applicants must be available July 1st-August 16th (skip July 4th)

Salary Range: $15.00-16.00/hr.

Position Summary:

Easterseals Camp Colonie is accepting resumes for a Camp Counselor. Camp Colonie is a unique outdoor summer school and recreational program for children with disabilities. Applicants should have strong communication skills, a desire to work outdoors with children and willingness to work closely as part of a team to support the students and campers.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Greet children at entrance to program and walk with the children to class and assist where necessary to settle campers in in.

  • Sit with children and engage them in activities, (participation with songs, cleaning up, adding cues and prompts as needed, etc.). Children should be prompted to engage in activities with limited assistance when appropriate.

  • Meal times should be a time when social skills are reinforced, be sure to engage child in conversations with other children.

  • During bathroom, assist the children in using the bathroom and in maintaining "good hygiene" (i.e. hand washing)

  • During pool time, assist the children as needed and provide proper level of supervision as mandated on their IEP.

  • Centers should be used as a time to promote socialization through small group activities that the children choose.

  • When the demand is met, provide ample praise (to reinforce positive behaviors and involvement) so that the child understands that following through on the expectations is a positive experience.

  • Read the through child's IEP, if applicable, and become familiar with the goals so that you can incorporate them into the school day.

  • Become familiar with a child's Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP) if applicable.

  • Act as a member of the teaching team, assisting other staff and children as needed.

  • Perform additional duties are requested.

Experience and Education:

  • High school Diploma or GED preferred.

  • Must be able to obtain or become CPR/First Aid certification.

  • Previous camping experience is a plus but not required.

  • Flexibility, desire to work outdoors and experience with children is preferred.

  • Must be 16 years of age or older

  • Must possess a New York State Student Employment Certificate if under 18 years of age
