Duties Description The ideal candidate will be a hands-on leader with a passion for retail, excellent organizational skills, and a strong commitment to delivering exceptional customer experiences. This role includes supervising a team of three or four employees and managing all aspects of the Gift Shop’s operations, including financial reporting, and maintaining a functional POS system, as well as creating and implementing policies to support operational excellence.Team Leadership and Supervision:• Lead, mentor, and schedule a team of three employees to ensure smooth daily operations.• Develop and deliver comprehensive training programs for the retail associates, including customer service best practices and operational procedures for completing transactions.• Foster a positive work environment that encourages teamwork and high performance.• Provide coverage, customer service, and process transactions behind the counter as needed.• Perform a full range of supervisory duties.POS and Financial Management:• Oversee the operation and maintenance of the POS system, including troubleshooting and ensuring accurate transactions.• Prepare and manage the gift shop’s annual budget (with revenue projections), daily reconcile cash registers, process bank deposits, and maintain accurate financial records.• Create pricing structure to maximize contribution margins, strategically price individual items, and track sales trends to make adjustments, increase margins or turn-over inventory. • Generate and analyze sales reports to inform decision-making and identify opportunities for improvement.• Oversee and implement an online sales platform. • Manage the processing and shipping of orders, reporting, and inventory control. • Troubleshoot issues with online e-commerce platform, including POS subscription, sales tax generator subscription and integration with the gift shop’s main POS platform. Inventory Management:• Monitor inventory levels to maintain optimal stock and minimize shortages or overstocking.• Conduct regular inventory audits through cycle counts and coordinate restocking and vendor orders as needed.• Provide inventory reports to supervisor for analysis and projections.Merchandising:• Develop and execute creative merchandising strategies to highlight key products and drive sales.• Ensure displays are visually appealing, well-organized, and seasonally appropriate.• Develop and maintain network of vendors to the State for purchasing merchandise for re-sale.• Work with Director on custom product development and execution.• Attend two to three merchandise trade shows/buyer shows for retailers per year (i.e., NY NOW and Upstate NY Gift Expo) • Some travel is required.Customer Service:• Foster a welcoming and positive environment to ensure an exceptional shopping experience for every customer.• Handle customer inquiries, feedback, and complaints professionally and efficiently.Administrations and Policy:• Provide administrative duties relating to procurement of merchandise, including but not limited to purchasing, purchase orders, receiving and reconciling in the State Financial System (SFS). • Enter and receive items into inventory via POS and database management. • Create and implement policies for cash handling operations, ensuring accuracy, accountability, and security.• Establish loss prevention strategies to minimize risks and protect assets.• Work with internal audit to ensure and improve standards for cash handling. • Develop customer service standards and ensure all team members are trained and consistently uphold them.

Minimum Qualifications Six years of experience* in retail experience with responsibility for purchasing, merchandising, and inventory management. *Substitutions:College study may be substituted for up to four years of experience with 30 credit hours equaling one year of experience.A master’s degree may substitute for an additional year of experience. Preferred qualifications:• Proven experience in retail management, preferably in a gift shop or specialty retail environment.• Strong leadership and policy development skills in cash operations.• Proven record of supervisory leadership and management.• Proficiency in Point of Sale (POS) systems and financial reporting.• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.• Creative flair for merchandising and a passion for delivering outstanding customer service.
