INTRODUCTION: This position is located in the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Service, Albany VA Medical Center. This position provides support to Physical Therapy and reports to the Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Supervisor. This vacancy will be open until filled.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ASSIGNED DUTIES: The Physical Therapist is a licensed professional therapist who demonstrates knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics associated with current professional Physical therapy practice and is practicing at the full performance level. The incumbent adheres to established department guidelines, ethics, and policies and protocols of the Physical Therapy department, Department of Veterans Affairs. This position is located in the Physical Therapy section of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at the VAMC, Albany, New York. Duties and responsibilities are carried out in a variety of settings throughout the Medical Center, as well as off-station sites including patient's homes, nursing homes, assistant living centers, etc. The individual holding this position, at this grade level providing clinical coverage would include independently solving complex problems related to their discipline (Physical Therapy adapting and modifying treatment plans, activities, and procedures to meet the needs of patients with complex disabilities.) The individual would serve as a subject matter expert and a consultant in their discipline (Physical Therapy) to other medical center staff in evaluating and treating patients and serving as a mentor to students treating patients. They are assigned to all program areas which are covered by the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department and provide professional, independent discipline specific (Physical Therapy) services in the assigned area. The incumbent at this level may provide coverage in any program area where the advanced specialized knowledge is required on a recurring basis due to the patient population served. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Bachelor's degree in Physical Therapy AND five years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist. Master's degree in Physical Therapy AND two (2) years of progressively independent experience as a physical therapist. Doctorate degree in physical therapy. Individual should hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice physical therapy in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation). Preferred Experience: BLS certified from the American Heart Association References: VA HANDBOOK 5005, PART II, APPENDIX G12 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12. Physical Requirements: The Physical Therapist may engage in the following activities/positions/tasks as defined: Lifting/carrying up to 45 lbs. intermittently, frequent walking, standing, sitting. Occasional stooping, kneeling, overhead reaching, fine manipulation, pushing, and/or pulling. In addition, occasional operation of a motor vehicle may be indicated.
