NYS Department of Transportation Highway Maintenance Worker Trainee 2 in Albany, New York

Highway Maintenance Workers are relied upon to keep our roads clear in the winter, and perform essential maintenance tasks throughout the year in every county of New York State. This is an important and rewarding career.

Positions are full time and permanent. Additionally, full time seasonal workers are hired each fall to supplement the snow and ice workforce during the winter.

Those hired will be trained and evaluated on several pieces of essential equipment and are expected to perform productive work while gaining experience. Physical labor is required, as is work with backhoes, front end loaders, stump grinders and other heavy equipment, while being trained on more complex equipment.
During the winter, maintenance workers primarily assist in snow and ice removal, but also are expected to perform general highway repairs and maintenance such as cold patching. Shifts vary depending on location, but run from early morning to early afternoon, and from early afternoon to late evening.

Minimum qualifications:
1. 18 Years of age or older.
2. Pass the Department of Civil Service medical exam and Pre-employment drug test.
3. A valid, non-restricted Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL), with no airbrake restriction, considered to be in good standing by the Department of Transportation.
4. Department of Transportation (DOT) Certification on DOT heavy dump truck within two weeks after start of employment.

Trainee 2 starts at $32,972. Some locations offer increased hiring rates.
