As a Nelnet intern, you are welcomed into dynamic teams with tenured leaders who recognize and appreciate your input and growth. Our summer program connects associates and interns company-wide through a weekly iTalks series, highlighting the diverse roles within our 24 business lines. In addition to your specific job responsibilities, you can look forward to strengthening your communication and collaboration skills through virtual meetings with a community of interns through the summer-long Pod Project.

Nelnet’s Security Developers are assigned to an active project and work closely with that project’s developers as well as security experts assigned to that project to help determine, implement, and define security measures and processes needed to adequately protect our organization. It is imperative that our security developers understand the business, the goals, information technology, and security. You must be able to:

• Perform application and environment security testing, evaluation, and hardening.

• Conduct automated static and dynamic code analysis with report creation and delivery.

• Develop internal automation and integrations with implemented security services.

• Collaborate with development teams to advance security of applications through training, code review, promotion of best practices, and continuous process improvement.

• Understand security intelligence, methodologies, and remain up to date on the latest breach trends including vulnerabilities and counter measures.

• Interface with both the business and user community to understand their security needs.

• Understand the policy, standards and procedures found in the Nelnet enterprise as well as understanding appropriate laws and regulations that our business.

• Research potential solutions to presented security issues and advocate for the preferred option

• Review, analyze, implement and administer vendor and internally developed security software, products and procedures to address security requirements.

• Participate in risk assessments, data processing, and security enhancements

Pay - $18-$24 dependent on location and year in school

Pursuing degree in an IT-related field


  1. Proficient in the use of development and Application Security products

  2. Proficient in at least one development language

  3. Familiarity with continuous integration and DevSecOps

  4. Familiarity and experience with various regulations governing IT environments.


  1. Knowledge of security, control and computer technology.

  2. Knowledge of and ability to apply concepts of statistics and probability to identify and address problems, trends, and relationships in work related data.

  3. Knowledge of various computer systems and software – PC and/or online – to input, access, modify or produce information or to execute preprograms
