New York State Energy Research and Development Aut Intern, Single Family Residential Supply Chain in Albany, New York

New York is leading the nation in the fight on global climate change and the transition to a clean energy-powered economy. The Climate Act (https://climate.ny.gov/) has created the most aggressive climate change goals in the nation and requires an ambitious agenda that blends proven catalysts with innovative approaches while operating across a broader energy arena that is rapidly evolving. New York State Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) is a driving force in realizing this agenda. NYSERDA works with stakeholders that span residents, business owners, developers, community leaders, local government officials, universities, utilities, investors, entrepreneurs, and more, to develop, invest, and foster conditions that:

  • Attract the private sector capital investment needed to expand New York’s clean energy economy.

  • Overcome barriers to using clean energy at a large-scale in New York.

  • Enable New York’s communities and residents to benefit equitably from energy efficiency and renewable energy.

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

This is a paid internship for current students at an accredited college. The pay rate is from $18 to $20 per hour based on current class year. This internship will begin on June 2, 2025 and continue through end of Summer 2025.

Interns must be located in New York State or an immediately adjacent state while working. It is expected that interns will follow our telework policy, with a combination of in-office (at Albany) and remote work. Interns work up to 18.5 hours per week during the semester, and up to 37.5 hours per week between semesters, when not attending classes.

Addressing the residential sector is an essential component to meeting New York State’s energy goals. In 2018, the residential sector consumed 30% of the energy produced in New York State. To achieve the State’s climate goals, we must be on pace to serve more than 200,000 homes per year with upgrades to all-electric and made energy efficient by 2030. To accomplish this, we need to engage with a broad spectrum of market actors with strong expertise in the residential sector – spanning across single-family to multifamily, retrofits and new construction.

NYSERDA’s Single Family Residential (SFR) Supply Chain Programs are designed to increase the quality and sales of residential heat pump installations by working across the supply chain with heat pump manufacturers, distributors, and their networks of contractors to channel technical and educational tools and resources to contractors, building market capacity. SFR’s Supply Chain Programs include:

Clean Heat Connect (https://cleanheatconnect.ny.gov/) - a network of air source heat pump manufacturers and distributors

Experience Clean Heat Pro – a program launching in 2025 that will provide opportunities for HVAC contractor technicians, salespeople and others who have not committed to heat pump sales to directly experience the benefits of cold climate heat pumps.

Experience Clean Heat (https://cleanheat.ny.gov/experience-clean-heat/) – a program that builds consumer-oriented communications campaigns around publicly accessible locations with existing heat pumps such as tourist locations, breweries, libraries, churches, municipal buildings and more.

Business Consulting and Mentoring Initiative – planned for launch in 2025, this program will develop and provide access to a pool of business development consultants for heat pump installation contractors to apply to the program and utilize consultants to overcome barriers to scaling up their heat pump business.
