Alfred University Drawing, Painting, Photography & Printmaking Technician in Alfred, New York

The School of Art and Design is seeking an organized and motivated individual to join our energetic program as Technician of Drawing, Painting, Photography and Printmaking housed within the Divisions of Drawing & Painting and Expanded Media. The technician provides support for faculty and students and is a 12-month position. This position has been evaluated for compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act and is subject to premium pay for all hours worked more than 40 in a payroll week. 

Responsibilities:

  • Supervisory:

  • Hire & train work-study students, managing their work schedules and monitoring their time sheets.

  • Hire figure models as requested. Hire, train, and work closely with the student model coordinator.

  • Administrative:

  • Ordering equipment and materials.

  • Oversight of safety training, documentation, and technology for studios and labs

  • Maintain records of receipts and purchase orders for budgetary review.

  • Research new equipment for purchase and make recommendations to faculty regarding purchases.

  • Prepare purchase orders/requests, maintain records of and follow through on all orders.

  • Assist Division Chairs in the planning of purchases and perform routine analysis and reconciliation of budgets for internal and external purposes.

  • Oversee the daily operation of the equipment cage.

  • Coordinate studio set-up at the beginning of each semester and co-ordinate all clean-up schedules.

  • Co-ordinate preparing studio spaces for senior shows in the spring and summer use.

  • Manage the recycle rag program and laundry service

  • Determine necessary maintenance and repairs of studios, initiate and submit work orders, oversee and follow up on projects.

  • Assist with orientation of new and visiting faculty in studio workings.

  • Computer and Equipment Support:

  • Maintain computers and printers in digital photography lab and peripherals on mobile learning center and updates software (computer, LCD projector, digital camera, scanner, Wacom tablet, high-end color printer, etc.)

  • Provide technical support to students. Assist with faculty support.

  • Initiate maintenance and repair of equipment.

  • Do basic carpentry work including design, construction, and repair of items; basic electrical repairs; and basic mechanical repairs.

  • Instructional:

  • Provide additional technical instructional assistance for students when needed including, but not limited to, the use of software, printers, canvas stretching, traditional print media and digital photo processes and the use of basic tools and equipment used in all studios.

  • Instruct students in standard operation procedures in studios.

  • Safety /Other:

  • Serve on the University - wide Safety Committee as needed.

  • Initiate scheduling of safety instruction in the classroom for all classes in painting, drawing, photography, and print media and instructs students in a classroom setting regarding safety procedures in those areas.

  • Maintain a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies including, but not limited to, obtaining, and updating Safety Data Sheets (SOS) information pertaining to any hazards associated with their work environment in all studios, researching safety issues and new safety equipment, taking annual chemical inventory of all storage areas in both divisions, etc. Responsible for keeping studios in both divisions in EPA and OSHA compliance.

    Requirements:

  • Education: Master's Degree or relevant experience preferred.

  • Experience: Three to five years of work experience in an art and design educational environment preferred.

  • Additional Knowledge/Skills:

  • Working knowledge of Adobe Suite, MS Office, Mac computers, large format printers and experience in networking computers.

  • Working knowledge of photographic equipment including enlargers, standard and digital cameras, lighting equipment, digital technologies, and exposing units.

  • Knowledge of equipment and materials used in painting studios.

  • Wide experience in print media and technical knowledge of print media processes and equipment.

  • Must be familiar with machines and have basic tool and carpentry skills.

  • Must be able to maintain complete and detailed records in an organized manner and prioritize project.

  • Must be self-motivated, have strong communication skills, and be able to work well with a wide range of stakeholders.
