Alfred University Professor of Practice: IDEA Generator (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access) in Alfred, New York

The School of Art and Design and Performing Arts Division seeks a dynamic artist and arts educator for a full time, three-year professor of practice position beginning the 2021-22 academic year.


The School of Art and Design and Performing Arts Division seeks an enterprising individual who will activate and coordinate diversity initiatives through curricular and co­-curricular programming. The successful candidate will become part of a progressive, distinguished, and nationally recognized visual and performing arts program and will have the opportunity to develop programing and curricula, in collaboration with students, staff, and faculty. We seek an arts educator with a wide range of experience and practices in the arts. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who are members of groups that historically have been underrepresented in the arts.

Responsibilities: This twelve-month position will work in collaboration with the dean's office and the arts community to:

  • Teach an annual course load of four courses based on the candidate's expertise (ex: studio practice course in area of interest or expertise, a first-year foundations course, applied learning experience internship course)

  • Assist the dean and lead initiatives as appropriate to support inclusion diversity, equity and access initiatives for the school and division including:

  • Develop the programmatic focus for IDEA initiatives.

  • Provide mentorship to the students, faculty and staff.

  • Benchmark and assess accomplishments and areas for growth in establishing a curriculum and climate that promotes the free exchange and understanding of intersectional and marginalized ideas.

  • Broadening the recruitment and support of historically underrepresented identities throughout the school and division's students, faculty, and staff while facilitating practices of inclusion based in the arts.

  • Creating and sustaining initiatives to galvanize our community around issues of equity cultivate and model individual and communal agency development and empower artistic creativity that drives cultural transformation through a shared engagement with creative practice.

  • Assist with the creation of a summer residency program for BIPOC artists.

  • Support the development, execution, and maintenance of collaborative programming between the School of Art and Design and the Performing Arts Division.

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned and as necessary.

    Program Information:

    The School of Art and Design is made of seven divisions: Art History; Ceramic Art; Drawing, Painting and Photography; Expanded Media; Foundations; Sculpture/Dimensional Studies. The Performing Arts Division is made of four departments: Music, Theatre, Dance and Performance Design and Technology. The eight divisions report through division heads and chairs to the Dean. There are forty-six full-time faculty and twenty-three staff and four hundred students.

    The divisions are committed to evolving our program and curricula to foster equity, inclusion , and social justice.   • Experience (and success) with initiatives surrounding issues of culture and equity

  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively (Successful ability to collaboratively engage)

  • Experience in program and/or curricular development

  • Three years teaching experience or equivalent is required

  • An MFA in art and/or design, or equivalent experience

  • Forward thinking and dynamic change agent (Having a transformative mindset, intercultural humility, and developmental capacity)

  • Foster a positive and inclusive work environment (Capacity for transformative and not transactional interaction)

  • Experience with facilitation of public programing and mentorship
