Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Assists students, individually or in groups, with specialized instructional programs prepared by the teacher to present or reinforce learning concepts.

  • Assists teachers in the development and use of available instructional resources, materials and equipment appropriate to planned learning programs for students.

  • Assists with the monitoring of students' activities in the halls and cafeteria, on the playground and during arrival and dismissal periods.

  • Attends to the physical needs of students such a helping with clothing or attending to personal hygiene and toilet habits as needed.

  • Learns and uses behavior management strategies to increase students' participation in the educational program.

  • Assists teachers with clerical tasks such as attendance taking and reporting, lunch money and other collections, and organizing materials, equipment and furniture for day-to-day class work.

  • Transports students as program needs require.

  • All supervisors, managers, and employees are all responsible for helping to create a workplace free of recognized hazards, and for acting safely.

Education/Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED).

Certifications:

NYS Teaching Assistant Certification or eligible to complete the requirements for and maintain NYS Teaching Assistant Certification.

Language Ability:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to present effectively information in one-on-one and small group situations to parents, students, and other employees of the organization.

Math Ability:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills:

Word processing, Internet software, E-mail

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to lift/move up to 60 pounds. The vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Additional Requirements:

A valid New York State Driver’s License and ability to drive and driving record acceptable for agency insurance coverage are required.

Must have daily access to their own vehicle and drive our students when the program requires it.

Required to complete, pass, and use CALM training, provided by the school, which includes de-escalation strategies and approved protective holds and movements for students.
