New York State Civil Service Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 (Seasonal) in Altmar, New York

Minimum Qualifications

30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography. ## Duties Description The job duties will consist of driving along the river seeking anglers to interview about their fishing trip. The majority of the interviews for this survey will be conducted in the parking areas from anglers that have completed their trip for the day. At two times during the survey day a full count of all the anglers and/or vehicles along the route will be completed. The technician, if possible, will be identifying the species and measuring for length of any fish caught by anglers. Distribution of fish identification brochures and angling regulations material as well as assisting anglers with related questions is expected. Data entry will be also be required. The technician will encounter inclement weather and difficult anglers. The work hours will be a randomly selected AM or PM shift for each survey day. The shift hours change with the amount of daylight available, but will be eight hours long. The survey date schedule is also randomly selected with four weekdays and one weekend day per week (including all holidays except Christmas). The position will be based out of the NYS DEC Salmon River Hatchery in Altmar. The technician will be provided a vehicle to use during work hours. ## Additional Comments Must have valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain and/or work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must have experience interacting with the public.

This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with a duration of 9/1/19 through 3/31/20. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date, which may be prior to dates listed.
