ABOUT THE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY PROGRAM (EOP):

The State University of New York's Educational Opportunity Program provides access, academic support and financial aid to students who show promise for succeeding in college but who may not have otherwise been offered admission. Available primarily to full-time, matriculated students, the program supports students throughout their college careers within the University.

GENERAL FUNCTIONS:

This position is responsible for providing engaging, creative, and interactive instruction and coursework to high school students from school districts around NYS during the 3 to 6-week Summer Program. The instruction provided is intended to enhance academic skills such as planning and time management, turn students on to learning, and prepare them for the following academic school year. This position will also introduce students to basic concepts from Career and Educational Planning and Foundations of Academic Success.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work within the program guidelines and assist in achieving program objectives.

Work closely with co-instructor to develop and implement summer program curricula applicable to high school seniors transitioning from high school into college. This requires developing 45 contact hours and submitting syllabi to be approved by the Director prior to the Program start.

Instruct Monday - Friday, 4 hours a day (2 hours in the morning and 2 hours in the afternoon.)

Monitor and document progress of assigned students as they participate, and complete work.

Communicate with the Student Advisors and Director on a regular basis to provide updates on students' progress and participation in summer activities.

Maintain a productive, professional relationship with GCC faculty and staff, local businesses, and community agencies.

Participate in Summer Program staff meetings.

Complete all required paperwork/reports and submit in a timely manner.

Fulfill other responsibilities and tasks as assigned by the Program Director.

Job Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

Master's Degree and/or Certification in a related field or 18 graduate hours in the subject area to teach required or a Master's degree with 2 years of teaching/tutoring experience at a college level, preferred, K-12 experience acceptable.

Experience

Demonstrated experience teaching new and/or innovative curricula and knowledge of learning styles/strategies. Preference is given for experience working with youth from low income backgrounds and first-generation college bound students.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Ability to relate effectively and work independently with low income, first-generation college bound youth is required. Candidate must be knowledgeable of middle/high school level student learning styles and creative teaching techniques. Candidate must have the ability to communicate effectively and work in a team. Must be able to demonstrate computer skills and be proficient at Microsoft Office programs. Must demonstrate commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as the ability to establish and maintain positive learning environments for students and collaborative relationships with colleagues. Incumbent must be mindful of and develop solutions that can accommodate all individuals to use GCC facilities without barriers, both digitally and physically Preference given to individuals having backgrounds similar to the target population, experience working for an EOP program, and/or are an EOP alum.

Additional Information:

SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a temporary, full-time position for the EOP 3 week summer program and is compensated at a rate of $2,400. Must have reliable transportation as some travel is required. Occasional evening and weekend hours. Official transcripts required upon hire.
