Summary This position serves as a Motor Vehicle Operator (MVO) under the Transportation Group/Engineering Service Line in order to provide transportation services, and therefore increase medical and behavioral health care access, to Veterans as part of the T21Transportation initiative. Responsibilities Duties include, but are not limited to the duties below: Duties include work involved in the operation of gasoline, diesel or electric powered wheeled vehicles with the GVRW (gross vehicle weight rating) of less than 26000 lbs. Drives a variety of Government vehicles (cars, vans, wheelchair vans, ambulances) for the purpose of transporting patients. Driving assignments are conducted in a safe, courteous manner and are completed in a timely fashion with very few route or destination mistakes. The incumbent provides scheduled transportation to Veteran passengers to and from the Bath VAMC, other facilities, Community Based Outpatient Clinics and non-traditional, pre-established, key rural public pick up and drop off sites. On a daily basis, the incumbent is responsible for verifying passengers are authorized to travel in the vehicle and tracking completing and returning documentation on the number of Veterans and caregivers transported in the vehicle. The incumbent safely loads, secures and unloads passengers, who may or may not have a disability, their belongings, and any passengers' durable medical equipment. He/ She prepares trip tickets, maintenance service records and reports of accidents if necessary. The vehicle is driven in restricted traffic environments on Government properties and over public roads and highways in all weather and traffic conditions at controlled speeds to ensure the riders' comfort and to conform to speed limits and environmental conditions. The incumbent is responsible for monitoring the vehicle maintenance needs of their assigned vehicle, re-fueling the vehicle, and maintaining its interior and exterior cleanliness. The MVO is the first contact with the Veteran and his/her caregivers and I responsible for making a positive first impression. He/she interacts in a courteous and respectful manner with a wide variety of people on a regular basis. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Effort is required to assist Veterans and/or caregivers from entering and embarking from the vehicle. The position requires sitting for prolonged periods of time, regular stooping and bending, the use of arms and feet to operate the vehicle and occasionally the lifting of moderately heavy medical equipment/wheelchairs. The incumbent may be required to change a flat tire. Operates vehicles in all types of weather and traffic conditions on public roads and highways; there is the possibility of both minor personal accidents, such as cuts or bruises while loading or unloading the vehicle. As well as injuries as a result of a more serious vehicle accident. The incumbent is exposed to periods of driving in heavy traffic.
