Minimum Qualifications No Minimum Qualifications per Civil Service.Preferred QUALIFICATIONS:• A B.S. in biology, environmental studies, ecology, natural resources management, or a relevant discipline, such as aquatic ecology, conservation biology, wildlife management, land stewardship and 2+ years of professional experience in a relevant field.• Experience with the concepts of white-tailed deer management, including population assessment, vegetation monitoring, and aging.• Familiarity and experience working with nuisance wildlife.• Experience conducting habitat management projects in both upland and wetland settings.• Experience operating ATVs, UTVs, chainsaws, brush cutters, towing trailers, canoes, kayaks, and small outboard boats.• Working knowledge of NYS flora and fauna.• Experience working in the NYS Park system.• Ability to problem solve.• Experience with ArcGIS.• Experience using GPS and Orienteering.• Experience leading small teams of field staff.• Comfort using pesticides when deemed necessary.
Duties Description The Natural Resources Supervisor will report directly to the Natural Resources Manager and assist with all components of natural resources management in the Palisades Region. The incumbent will assist in overseeing seasonal staff who focus on wildlife management, biological monitoring, and habitat management activities throughout the Spring, Summer, and Fall months. They will work closely with stewardship staff to aid and implement projects ranging from wetlands restoration, forest management, meadow restoration, lake management, invasive species control, herbicide application, avian surveying, biological monitoring, and nuisance wildlife work. Hours may be variable, and a flexible schedule may be required depending on project needs.
Additional Comments Work Location: Palisades Region, office based in Bear Mountain, NY, Sterling Forest State Park, and Other Facilities as needed.OPERATIONAL NEEDS: • Act as a field lead for seasonal natural resource staff.• Collect and prepare biological monitoring data, as well as provide input on the study design/ implementation.• Assist in the preparation of permits, RFQs, and SEQRA forms as they related to natural resource projects and activities.• Participate/ present natural resource related topics at public meetings, conferences, and at times in an educational setting to park end users.• Assist in the implementation of natural resource projects related to wetlands management, wildlife management, and forest management. • Working closely with regional staff, implement environmental policies, guidelines, principles, and provide specific guidance into daily activities, project development, plans, and actions. • Must possess a valid driver’s license• Must have excellent organizational skills in field setting• Must have excellent communication skills• Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other basic computer skills• Must have an ability to work and maintain a good attitude while performing job duties and interacting with park patrons• Must have a strong interest in, and commitment to environmental stewardship as well as a team-oriented approach to solving environmental challengesIt is the responsibility of each applicant to accurately describe their experience and demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualifications and operational needs for the position.• Eligible for health insurance, CSEA Dental, and CSEA vision eligible upon hire with 42-day waiting period• Option to join the NYS Retirement System• Promotional opportunities
