Job Description:

The Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) at Binghamton University provides academic support, retention services, and post-secondary guidance to New York State historically underrepresented and financially disadvantaged middle and high school students. Through outreach, education, and access to knowledge and resources, STEP will help alleviate the effects of structural barriers to STEM education and STEM careers.

This program provides STEM-related after school and Saturday programming to supplement students' curriculum, as well as to support and increase their readiness and competitiveness when pursuing a post-secondary education in STEM fields or licensed professions.

The full-time Academic Counselor is under the general supervision of the Assistant Director and Co-Project Directors. STEP is a community-based grant program of the Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences and the Thomas Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science

Duties and Responsibilities:

Academic Counselor and Advisement:

  • Assist in the recruitment and selection of new participants

  • Visit the assigned school on a weekly basis to meet with students, teachers, principals, and guidance counselors

  • Maintain regular contact with parents through monthly meetings, appointments, and telecommunications

  • Assist the Assistant Director in student/tutor supervision at after-school tutoring sessions

  • Confirm graduates' enrollment and attendance at colleges and universities

  • Additional tasks as outlined and assigned by the program directors

Programming/Activity Coordination

  • Assist in coordinating the activity calendar for the academic year

  • Conduct monthly Saturday meetings on campus alongside full-time staff

  • Work with community agencies and organizations to provide community service projects for students

Student Record Maintenance/Report Generation

  • Maintain accurate and detailed student records and other data specified by the program directors. This will require the use of database software and general reporting.

Professional Development Activities:

  • Attend relevant professional development training (required)


  • Responsible for assisting with the development of program newsletters, brochures, and activity/informational flyers.

  • Must use social media for program activities and communication.


  • Bachelor's degree in any field, master's degree preferred

  • Experience with college counseling/advisement, and youth program development required

  • Strong organizational, oral, written, and computer skills

  • Self-motivated and able to exercise independent judgment

  • Valid N.Y.S. Driver's License

  • The academic year component and summer hours will require the Counselor to work varied hours based on program needs.

Additional Information:

Salary Range: $40,000, 12-month position.
