New York Edge Academic Support Specialist in Bronx, New York


New York Edge is the largest provider of after school and summer camp programs in New York City public schools. New York Edge is seeking a passionate, mission driven, and knowledgeable individual to fill the role of Academic Support Specialists for The Excellence Project at 189X. In part-time role, you will be responsible for implementing New York Edge’s academic support programs primarily Subject Based Tutoring and Homework Help. New York Edge offers Subject Based Tutoring and Homework Help in two ways. First, we use it as reinforcement of the day’s instruction. Second and more important, we use it to lead mini-lessons during tutoring. Based on the homework assignments and student performance, we see first-hand where students are struggling and adjust our instruction to provide quick mini lessons to improve our student’s comprehension of the topic.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Establish and apply clear expectations for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsible leading to a more productive use of time and increased achievement.

  • Connect with day-school teachers to get insights about students and homework assignments and the types of materials and resources that are typically needed.

  • He/She, through the Program Director, ensures that they are trained in the methodology employed during the school day in regards to instruction.

  • Works with the subject teacher to provide tutoring in various curriculum areas.

  • Together with the subject teacher, prepares an action plan for each student who receives the tutoring service.

  • Helps in preparing materials for the teacher to ensure optimum use of instructional time.

  • Assesses student progress and communicates such to the teacher.

  • Maintains a weekly log of the tutoring services provided.

  • Must attend Professional Developments offered by New York Edge and Department of Education faculty.

  • Foster an emotionally safe environment where students are comfortable.

  • He/she fosters an atmosphere of fun and learning and serves as a role model to youth, always conducting him/herself in the utmost professional manner and maintaining appropriate boundaries

  • Promotes positive character development in all youth.


  • BS or BA required; MA in progress preferred

  • Must be responsible, reliable and punctual

  • Strong academic skills in Math and English. Knowledge of New York State Common Core Standards and test preparation

  • Demonstrated interest in the field of education, child development

  • Well organized, able to work both independently and collaboratively

  • A minimum of two years direct experience working or volunteering with youth under 13 in a classroom, after school, or community based environment

  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination required


  • Monday – Friday, during after school hours 3pm-6pm

  • 18 hours a week

The Academic Support Specialist will be required to report to their assigned school building and interact with students, staff, parents and school administration while following all local, state, and federal Covid-19 guidelines, policies and mandates.

At time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
