New York Botanical Garden Assistant Educator, Edible Academy School Programs in Bronx, New York
Position Summary:
Assistant Educator, Edible Academy School Programs Assist with the development, logistics, and facilitation of school programs at the Edible Academy.
Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
· Work with the Edible Academy Garden Educators to introduce students and teachers to lessons in natural, social, and culinary sciences, math, and English Language Arts, through gardening workshops.
· Help the Edible Academy Garden Educators to share grade specific units of study through four garden workshops over the course of the 2024-2025 school year. (Pre K – 5th grade)
· Help the Edible Academy Garden Educators to share one visit garden workshops during Winter 2025. (Pre K – 5th grade)
· Assist with the development of school group programming curriculum, necessary program collateral, as well as planned pre and post visit materials.
· Help to prepare the garden and classrooms for workshops, arranging program supplies, tools, equipment, and other relevant program collateral for the day’s planned activities.
· Help to clean the garden and classrooms after completion of workshops, putting away supplies, tools, equipment, and other relevant program collateral.
· Participate in daily meetings and reflections as well as seasonal Children’s Education Department Professional Learning Workshops.
Qualifications:
• Applicant should have previous experiences in garden-based education and/or teaching experience with interest in gardening.
• Applicant should have excellent communication and organizational abilities.
• Applicant should have strong foundational knowledge in natural sciences.
• Applicant should have experience working with groups of children and a facility for managing groups of children in classroom and outdoor settings.
• Applicant should be prepared to work in a collaborative team setting.
Physical Demands and work environment:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum,
· Work outdoors under a variety of weather conditions.
· Lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.
· Work under low, moderate, or loud work conditions.
· Be comfortable using a variety of garden and kitchen tools.
· Be comfortable teaching for about three hours each day.
· Be comfortable working with enthusiastic and excited school children.
Baseline Work Schedule:
Work schedule is 9am – 2pm, Tuesday through Friday, September to June
Pay Rate: $22.00 - $24.25 per hour
