Assistant Principal (Elementary)

Hired by, reports to and evaluated by the Principal

The Assistant Principal is an integral part of the school's educational program. The Assistant Principal is responsible for the overall successful functioning of the middle school in student academics, adult talent, and systems.

Instructional Leadership:

  • Coordinate with principal and content specialists to support teachers developing competence through modeling, observing, providing feedback and supporting teacher reflection

  • Observe teachers at least twice per month and conduct post conference meetings

  • Track and monitor teacher responsiveness to feedback as evidenced by implementation of strategies

  • Ensure that the core curricula are implemented to effectively meet the needs of students

  • Work with teachers and instructional staff in establishing positive classroom climates

  • Support teachers in establishing effective classroom management systems and developing students' positive social behaviors

  • Review teacher lesson plans for quality ensuring standards alignment, rigor, differentiation, etc.

School Culture:

  • Assist in building a school culture that evidences high expectations for both students and adults

  • Ensure a safe, supportive and productive environment for students, staff and families

  • Model effective instructional practices in staff meetings, professional development sessions and team meetings

  • Oversee extra-curricular activities, Summer Academy and test-prep camps

  • Support teachers in developing behavior intervention plans for students who struggle meeting school behavior expectations

  • Develop and teach conflict resolution strategies to students

  • Develop emergency protocols for students with aggressive behaviors

  • Serve on the Leadership Team in support of aligning school activities with our mission and goals

  • Assess student emotional support needs and develop plans and services to meet needs

  • Develop and oversee progress on the school's Social/Emotional Program Strategic Plan, which includes tangible ways to monitor student progress

Recruitment and Enrollment:

  • Develop, implement and evaluate the school's annual Lottery, Enrollment and Registration processes

  • Maintains and updates student information, in the areas of academics, personal contact info, health and emergency info, and parental permission, using State Required database and school database

  • Manages student recruiting process including outreach and tours for parents

  • Ensures student enrollment is at the correct student count

  • Maintains student waiting list according to State law; receives and organizes applications

  • Ensures new student lottery is run in compliance with law, works with Business Leader to document process followed by an impartial party (auditor/Board Member)

  • Transmits student transfer/withdrawal paperwork to and/or from student's former or current school

Additional qualifications for this position:

  • Bilingual in english and Spanish strongly preferred

  • Strong interpersonal skills

  • Experience with children in a similar demographic group in an educational setting

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills

  • Demonstrated ability to engage the interest of young people
