New York Botanical Garden Bronx Green-Up Apprentice in Bronx, New York

Position Summary:

The Bronx Green-Up Apprentice will assist in all aspects of the Bronx Green-Up (BGU) program. Responsibilities include: preparing for, documenting and assisting with educational and horticultural projects in community and school gardens and urban farms, as well as preparing and updating materials in the office. The BGU Apprentices will report to the Outreach and Education

Manager.

Additionally, this position supports, through actions and conduct, NYBG’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility initiatives and helps to build and maintain an inclusive organization culture throughout the institution.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Prepare for community workdays at community garden and urban farm sites.

  • Work closely with BGU staff to develop and implement gardening workshops, events and projects.

  • Assist with community garden and urban farm workshops and workdays.

  • Organize and maintain materials, tools, garden inventory database, and photos.

  • Assist with BGU events, projects, outreach and educational efforts as needed.

    Qualifications:

  • Experience in community outreach and/or education.

  • Ability to prioritize workload and work independently and as a team player.

  • Enthusiastic and willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions, as well as indoors.

  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications or equivalent.

  • Prior experience working in community gardening, urban horticulture or urban agriculture preferred.

  • Experience with community engagement, particularly related to food justice and/or community health preferred.

  • Familiarity with the Bronx preferred.

  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) skills a plus.

    Physical Demands & Work Environment:

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to, at minimum, work outdoors in all weather conditions in all seasons, stand, sit, crouch, kneel, and walk, use hand tools and power equipment, and lift and\or move up to 40 pounds. The employee is required to perform tasks repetitively.

    Baseline Work Schedule: Wednesday- Friday, 9-5pm

    Pay Rate: $22/hr
