Brilla Public Charter Schools is a network of elementary and middle schools that currently serve over 1,360 students from the Mott Haven and University Heights area and surrounding neighborhoods in the Bronx. We plan to grow our network from our five current campuses to eight over the next decade, reaching some 3,200 students in the Bronx. Position Overview

The Character Initiatives Lead is a leadership team member whose primary responsibilities are to establish, implement, and maintain the vision for character across all aspects of the school. As with all Brilla Leadership positions, this will also involve uplifting and furthering the Brilla Leadership Competency Model ( in all aspects, as Brilla conceives of leadership holistically. Supervised by the Assistant Principal, the Character Initiatives Lead serves as the content expert and planning authority for all of the character initiatives components in the school, ensuring vertical and horizontal alignment, high quality virtue formation aligned to strategic priorities, and the flourishing of the entire school community. The Character Initiatives Lead is the main liaison between the school and the Brilla Network office and manages the Character Initiatives Liaison(s) at their building (as it specifically pertains to their character initiatives work). Components of character initiatives include character studies lesson plans, socio-emotional learning, virtue formation across stakeholders, restorative practices, and dignified engagement.

Character Initiatives Leads develop the content knowledge and planning capacities of grade-level content liaisons, ensuring that deep content knowledge and best pedagogical practice permeates the school (such as lesson plan internalization, student engagement protocols, grade level community responsiveness, and building genuine community). Character Initiatives Leads also develop the content knowledge and implementation practices of staff across the building by facilitating adult character formation, leading trainings, and observing for holistic trends in the implementation of our approach, amongst other things. Successful Character Initiatives Leads believe deeply in the potential of the classical form of education and facilitate the creation/revision of resources to deepen the school community’s understanding of Truth, Beauty, and Goodness.

This position requires a positive, flexible, solutions-oriented, organized, and reflective leader who can balance multiple roles and responsibilities with grace and virtue. Character Initiatives Leads work in conjunction with the network wide Character Initiatives team to ensure consistent quality of resources, development, and character formation for the entire school community. In addition to planning and coaching requirements, Character Initiatives Leads maintain inventories and requisitioning and attend regular Character Initiatives team meetings. Character Initiatives Leads actively deepen their own knowledge of explicit and implicit formation in service of understanding moral truths, honoring each person’s freedom, and supporting all to lead a flourishing life. Brilla Character Initiatives Leads prioritize living a life of deep meaning and purpose that is both academically excellent and character rich. Core Competencies & Responsibilities

Brilla Character Initiatives Leads Set the Standard.

  • Facilitate the creation, revision, and execution of Character Initiatives (i.e. moral, virtue, social-emotional, equity and inclusivity, restorative practices) across all stakeholder groups under the supervision of the Director of Character Initiatives - Elementary and/or Character Initiatives Officer

  • Collaborate with Literacy and Math content leads around incorporation of Character Initiatives across academic contents

  • Collaborate with Culture, Data & Assessment, and Student Services Leads to ensure the Character Initiatives approach is transcendent across all elements of the school program while capitalizing on the individual and collective value of all domains.

  • Facilitate purposeful, regular unit and lesson studies that deepen content knowledge and pedagogical awareness for planners and grade teams and guarantees excellence in execution

  • Develop and facilitate Character Initiatives formation and trainings sessions for staff and families

  • Lead the school’s Character Initiatives approach and implementation

  • Model for and coach teachers to excellence in role competencies as well as behavioral competencies

  • Visibly live the Brilla Mission through consistent professional dress, modeling of core virtues, execution of professional norms, and enthusiastic, regular engagement in ongoing professional development and community-building

  • Design and facilitate Mission-in-Progress development sessions, weekly staff reflection and journaling sessions, and character-focused sessions as assigned by leadership

  • Foster and maintain productive, collaborative, and collegial working relationships with leaders, team members, staff members, parents, and community members

  • Ensures and supports the consistent implementation of classroom management and responsiveness through collaboration with Student Services Team

  • Contribute to a positive school culture through attendance at Brilla-sponsored Culture Events and regular professional communication

  • Plan, facilitate, and attend regular, mission-critical programming including Character Initiatives Lead meetings, summer development sessions, data days, parent workshops, family conferences, and other opportunities

  • Commit to be available by phone after school hours until 7:00pm each work day to address any student or family questions or concerns (cell phone provided by school)

  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Facilitate engaging, purposeful coaching meetings with teachers with guidance from the Director of Character Initiatives - Elementary and/or Character Initiatives Officer

  • Provide feedback and make active improvements to the curriculum and corresponding student materials

  • Attend to the growth and development of virtues and sub-virtues in students, staff, and families

  • Demonstrate preparation and skill in working with and leading students & colleagues from all cultural, economic and ability backgrounds

  • Organize and manage time and commitments efficiently to maximize productivity and intentionality throughout the school day and school year

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher from an accredited institution, preferably in content-related field (i.e. liberal arts, child development, psychology, philosophy)

  • Possession of current teaching certification as an elementary or middle school teacher

  • Demonstrated familiarity with 2+ of the following: moral development, virtue ethics, character education, civic education, social-emotional learning, restorative practices and/or restorative justice
