Police Athletic League College Access Senior Advocate in Bronx, New York

The Police Athletic League (PAL) is the largest independent youth organization in New York City that provides educational and recreational activities for children and young adults. PAL Inc. and The New York City Police Department work in partnership to provide communities with summer and after-school recreational and educational activities.

We are looking for a part-time College Access Senior Advocate who will be responsible for overseeing a caseload of approximately 12 high school juniors or seniors enrolled in PAL’s College Access Program (CAP). CAP supports teenagers on their path to high school graduation and college enrollment. Advocates will be responsible for working with each student to ensure that students are consistently working towards achieving the goals that they have set for themselves. Advocates will also be responsible for facilitating weekly group workshops with the students. Positions are 12 hours per week during after school hours with openings in the Fordham section of The Bronx or Jamaica, Queens

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide individual case management concerning educational goals students have set for themselves.

  • Ongoing recruitment, orientation, and registration of participants, as needed.

  • Facilitate weekly group workshops in areas of college prep, job readiness, and life skills.

  • Monitor the progress and achievements of students as well as identify any barriers or potential obstacles that may arise and work with students to identify solutions.

  • Plan and attend several college trips throughout the school year to include out of state visits.

  • Maintain clear and organized records, including weekly schedules, daily attendance, student folders, and case management reports;

  • Collect all necessary data for compliance with funding sources and internal systems (i.e. program and school attendance, quarterly school report cards, outcomes and measurements, weekly programmatic reports, and Quality Assurance procedures);

  • Explore and make recommendations about opportunities to expand and improve PAL’s CAP program, including expanding the type of activities offered;

  • Attend professional development and program improvement training sessions;

  • Maintain communication with Program Manager and worksite supervisors, participants and their families, and contract managers to ensure effective programming;

  • Remain current regarding the best practices in the fields of education and workforce development to enhance program effectiveness;

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings;

  • Perform follow up of recently exited participants

  • Additional duties as assigned by the Program Manager.

Knowledge, Skills, and Qualifications

  • Associates Degree Required or 60 credits in the field of Education or Youth Development.

  • Bachelor's Degree a plus.

  • Experience working with teenagers in both individual & group settings.

  • Demonstrated ability to work with high-risk teens from diverse backgrounds.

  • Previous Workshop Facilitation experience (Lesson planning a plus)

  • Research, data entry, and basic computer skills required. (Social Media and Marketing skills a plus)

  • Demonstrated ability to work as a team member and roll-out programs and initiatives;

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task with excellent follow-through;

  • Self-motivated and able to work efficiently and effectively under pressure;

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills;

  • Interest in providing quality educational and enrichment experiences to teenagers
