Summary:
New York Edge seeks a dynamic, community-minded person with experience in the youth development and education fields to lead the organization’s Community School and Beacon programming. The Deputy Director of Community Engagement Programs is responsible for the overall success of Community Schools and Beacon Centers within their portfolio. You will be responsible for daily program operations, program development, risk management, contract compliance, staff recruitment, training and supervision, relationship building, data analysis and fiscal management. The Deputy Director will cultivate and forge positive relationships with Principals and other school administrators, district administrators, parents and key community stakeholders, while increasing the organization’s presence in target communities and seeking to align resources that meet the needs of families.
Pay:
$80,000 to $85,000. Salary offered is commensurate with experience and credentials.
Schedule:
Monday-Friday (evenings and weekends may be required)
Essential Job Functions:
Assist Program Directors with the development of needs assessments within their school communities and monitor the implementation of strategies to address those needs
Develop new and innovative programming that supports the current needs of students, parents and community members
Support Program Directors with aligning curriculum to New York Edge and funder requirements and guidelines
Support Program Directors in intentional pedagogic approaches and curriculum development (grounded in the latest evidence-based positive youth development framework, ensuring DOE/funder alignment, and sharing new trends curriculum/learning landscape)
Support Program Directors with the effective delivery of culturally competent and inclusive programs; with an emphasis on project- based learning, civic engagement, college & career readiness, mental health & social-emotional learning, social justice and student voice
Support Program Directors with designing and implementing recruitment plans for all programs
Conduct regular site visits and provide observation feedback
Assess program performance and create continuous quality improvement plans
Develop goals and benchmarks for evaluating success
Build collaboration between key after-school stakeholders, especially Directors, organizational partners, and principals to support the Community Schools and Beacon Center program models
Support the planning and coordination of special events
Oversee daily operations of all programs within their portfolio
Responsible for risk management at all sites within their portfolio
Evaluate staff performance, identify areas of improvement, develop and lead staff trainings
Encourage and support Program Directors and line staff in their professional development (identify problem areas and potential weaknesses) to improve program operations, offerings and staff collaborations
Ensure that Program Directors are fully knowledgeable of all protocols and procedures
Assess data to inform program decisions and strategies
Communicate with liaisons to various funders and external parties
Review and approve various items, such as staff attendance, payroll and purchases
Assist in staff recruitment & retention efforts
Create standardized procedures and forms
Attend meetings, trainings and functions as scheduled
Work closely with Director of Development in response to requests for proposals and securing state, federal and local funding
Monitor attendance reports and follow-up on individual site challenges related to recruitment and retention
Responsible for managing all budgets within his/her portfolio
Represent agency at multiple local and national forums
Ensure each site maintains comprehensive files for legal, financial, grant and licensing purposes
Ensure contractual compliance is met by incorporating grant milestones into performance outcomes
Manage program deliverables and reporting for government contracts
Must successfully manage workload and deadlines independently of direct supervision
Education Requirement(s):
Bachelor’s Degree required; Masters preferred in education, youth development, social work or related field
Experience Requirement(s):
Five years of management experience, preferably supervising school based, multi-site programs
At least 7 years experience in the field of urban education or community based organizations
Demonstrated work experience in building relationships to advance program goals and objectives, preferably in a youth development setting
Experience managing program budgets in excess of $800,000
Understanding of Department of Education (DOE) and Department of Youth and Community Development (DYCD) systems, language and Community School and Beacon initiatives
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Ability to maintain calm during tense situations and negotiations with a strong ability to create consensus and persuade diverse constituents
Bi-lingual skills (Spanish) highly preferred
Systems thinker, data-driven decision-maker with data utilization know-how
Proven ability to energize, motivate and engage staff
Excellent organizational, analytical, financial management, and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated ability to perform multiple tasks effectively in a challenging and fast-paced environment
Excellent oral and written communications skills
Proficiency with general computer literacy, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other systems as needed
Ability to travel to the sites and throughout the NYE service areas.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
Work is performed mostly within a New York City Public School but is required to interact with the community at-large during events, outreach, and trips.
May be required to walk up and down stairs, lift or move objects/materials as needed.
Work hours will be consistent Monday through Friday with potential for some weekend or evening scheduled activities or events.
At time of offer and acceptance, the job requires safety and security clearances through the Department of Education and Department of Health.
