Summary

The Housekeeping Aid Supervisor position is in the Environmental Management Service. The primary purpose of the position is to supervise employees performing duties involving custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, and sanitation activities to ensure a safe and healthy environment for the treatment and care of patients at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in Bronx, NY.

Responsibilities

IMPORTANT NOTICE: By law, Housekeeping Aid positions may only be filled with applicants eligible for Veterans' Preference. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Supervises, plans, directs and administers custodial, janitorial housekeeping, and sanitation activities as well as provide housekeeping coverage for one or more assignments necessary to complete the job.

Conducts QA sanitation inspections and takes appropriate steps to correct deficiencies.

Resolves routine problems and refers to supervisor all problems involving changes in established policy and procedures.

Assigns routine and non-routine duties on a daily and project basis.

Provides on-the-job training for subordinates as individual needs dictate.

Recommends and initiates disciplinary action for action and review by supervisor.

Initiates oral and written counseling on all matters of performance and conduct.

Routinely inspects area to assure the timely accomplishment of employee assignments, that sanitation leaves are being maintained, equipment properly cared for and that associated housekeeping objectives are accomplished in an expedient and timely manner.

Provides documented inspection reports and takes action on unaccomplished work.

Checks for physical plant repairs needed throughout assigned areas and initiates required work orders.

Other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: Various tours and shifts, subject to Irregular Tours of Duty which may include Rotating Shifts, nights, weekends and holidays. Must be flexible as shifts could vary based on departmental needs. Details will be discussed during the interview or at time of selection.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Duties require constant physical demands such as bending, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, and reaching. The Housekeeping Aide Supervisor consistently lifts from zero (0) to fifty (50) pounds, and periodically lifts over fifty (50) pounds. Incumbent must climb ladders to clean overhead equipment and operate heavy duty commercial equipment that requires eye, hand and body coordination. The Housekeeping Aide Supervisor will be exposed to wet/slippery floor surfaces, moving equipment, high and low temperatures, continuous noise and other uncomfortable environmental conditions.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
