RECREATION TEACHER ASSISTANT

Homes for the Homeless, Inc is actively seeking a full-time Recreation Teacher Assistant for our after-school program in our transitional shelters that will house families with children experiencing homelessness. Qualified candidates will have experience working with high-needs children and be able to thoughtfully and creatively address the needs of the families we serve. The Afterschool Counselor will collaborate with the Recreation Program Supervisor and Afterschool Group Leader on daily lessons and activities. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a passion for active engagement in classroom activities as well as an ability to work well as part of a team. This is an excellent position for a college student or professional interested in working with K-12 aged students outside of the traditional classroom setting.

ABOUT HOMES FOR THE HOMELESS, INC.

Homes for the Homeless, Inc. (HFH) is a non-profit social services organization operating family shelters throughout NYC that serve as a hub of opportunity for families both residing in shelter as well as those in the neighboring community. On-site programs range from childcare, early childhood education centers, afterschool clubs and programs, and youth recreation activities, such as sports teams, to housing assistance, case management, parenting workshops, career and job vocational training, support groups and substance abuse assistance, and family engagement and recreation events for the whole family.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Actively create and maintain a child-oriented atmosphere.

• Ensure developmentally appropriate educational, physical, and hygienic care of the children.

• Interact closely with and supervise children at all times.

• Ensure respectful interactions with children, parents, and staff.

• Assist in providing a balance of activities to meet the children’s needs.

• Contribute in curriculum planning to enrich the educational content of the children’s program.

• Assist in the day-to-day maintenance of the recreation space.

• Maintain good housekeeping standards at all times.

• Attend training as related to job duties.

• Perform other duties as may be requested by the Recreation Program Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High School Diploma, or its equivalent, AND one year of experience working with children less than 13 years of age.

  • Sensitivity and awareness while working with homeless and vulnerable populations.

  • Must be willing to consent to a multi-phase criminal background check.

  • Kind, creative, flexible, and caring personality that works well with children and as part of the after-school program staff team.

  • Strong schedule flexibility for coverage required.

    Work hours Monday through Friday during the school year. Hours will vary during the Summer.
