Overview:

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn's award-winning Spanish-language monthly newspaper, Nuestra Voz, is looking for a seasoned journalist to fill the role of editor. Nuestra Voz won Spanish Publication of the Year during the 2021 Catholic Media Awards and many other first-place awards for journalism excellence. Nuestra Voz is included with The Tablet, the diocese's English-language newspaper, and has a circulation of 55,000 newspapers. The editor reports to the editor-in-chief of print publications. He/she will be responsible for running the day-to-day editorial operations of the newspaper. Nuestra Voz and The Tablet are part of a larger news group that includes the award-winning nightly TV program, “Currents News,” and a digital department that oversees the group's online content. This editor will bring their toolbox of experience and innovation with them to grow the newspaper's readership across all platforms and fill the need for more faith-based content for the Spanish-speaking audience beyond the New York demographic. The editor will coordinate and share content with sub-departments within the group, and foster the paper's partnership with the international online publication cruxnow.com. The editor will collaborate with fellow editors to select the paper's content, edit reporter stories, and among other things, ensure that style remains consistent. Ideal candidates will have in-depth knowledge of the Catholic Church, its teachings, and doctrine, and they will commit themselves to becoming experts about the workings of the Diocese of Brooklyn.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the operation of the Spanish-language side of the news operation, which includes the print and digital versions of Nuestra Voz.

  • Work with the assignment desk editors and editors of The Tablet to coordinate coverage and maximize resources across all platforms.

  • Work with the lead designer to produce a visually appealing layout that includes pictures and graphics.

  • Attend editorial meetings, develop and pitch stories, and manage reporters through the process.

  • Edit all content closely for facts, style, and context.

  • Update website daily with topical stories, analysis, and features.

  • Update social media accounts daily with engaging content.

  • Launch and promote a weekly newsletter.

  • Communicate and coordinate with freelancers and columnists.

  • Hire a managing editor and freelancers.

  • Identify articles for journalism award submissions.

  • Create and submit a monthly digital report for the website and social media pages.

  • Work with the sales director to begin accepting paid print and digital ads.

  • Attend major diocesan events where the presence of the editor is beneficial to the newspaper and DeSales Media.

  • Ability to work non-traditional hours to cover breaking news and special events, as needed.

Experience/Skills:

  • 8+ years as a newspaper editor or editor-in-chief

  • Degree in journalism, or equivalent

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English

  • Excellent newspaper writing skills and knowledge of the AP style

  • Excellent news judgment

  • In-depth knowledge of the Catholic Church

  • Proven skills in management and leadership

  • Knowledge of libel laws

  • Ability to multitask with precision

  • Thrives in a deadline-driven environment

  • Attention to detail

  • Trained eye for design and layout

  • Adobe Creative Suite, specifically InDesign

  • Proficient in WordPress/Hubspot for posting articles to website.

  • Working knowledge of SEO
