PAVE Schools Executive Director in Brooklyn, New York

PAVE Academy Charter School (PAVE), a public charter school in Red Hook, Brooklyn, NY, prepares Kindergarten to 8th-grade students to thrive in competitive high schools and four-year colleges. PAVE provides its students with a rigorous academic program and a community built on the organization’s core values of Perseverance, Achievement, Vibrance, and Excellent Character (PAVE).

Founded in 2008, PAVE’s college preparatory school model prepares students to gain access to the competitive high schools that will place them on a path of expanded opportunities, and empower them to access lives of choice. PAVE educates 490 Kindergarten – 8th-grade students each school year. Across its student population, 87 percent of students are eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch Program (FRLP); 23 percent are special needs students, and 10 percent are English Language Learners (ELL).

Reporting directly to the PAVE Board of Trustees, the Executive Director will manage and support a team of 7 talented and aligned school leaders. Ideal candidates will have demonstrated exceptional academic results in a high performing school and are aligned with PAVE’s core values and educational philosophy. The Executive Director will be an inspiring and visionary leader responsible for PAVE’s consistent achievement of its mission, academic outcomes, administration, and financial objectives. This is an ideal opportunity for a dynamic and laser-focused leader with tremendous instructional instincts and the capacity to implement systems, and lead PAVE students, leaders, and teachers.

PAVE is currently transitioning from a shared services support structure to a stand-alone site. In the 2020-21 School Year, the school will absorb functions previously owned by the Charter Management Organization. In this new structure, the Executive Director will oversee localized instructional, operations, talent, and finance functions at PAVE, ensuring operational efficiency and effectiveness in service of strengthened school health and increased student outcomes.

Leadership and Organizational Management

  • Embody, advocate and operationalize the mission, vision, and strategic direction of PAVE

  • Oversee Board Relations in close partnership with PAVE Board Chair

  • Lead, in cooperation with the Board Chair, strategic planning efforts, the school’s accountability plan, and the long-term vision for the school

  • Provide oversight to all aspects of organizational health, including but not limited to student achievement, child development, health and wellness, support services, organizational stability, and financial strength

  • Represent the school in all public forums, with all community partners, and parents

  • Serve as chief liaison to SUNY Charter Schools Institute, leading all contract negotiation and relationship management efforts

Instructional Leadership & Program Development

  • Managing the elementary school and middle school principals, acting not only as a supervisor but also as a coach and consensus builder, remaining deeply committed to the values of developing and bringing out the strengths of all of PAVE’s people while also holding them accountable for their goals and desired outcomes

  • Manage and evaluate school leaders by designing and adhering to precise instructional systems, visiting classrooms to observe instruction, modeling effective instructional practices, providing support, and giving feedback

  • Manage and support the Shared Instructional Services Team – consisting of 4 direct reports – to ensure curriculum, student support services, and culture strategies and practices are aligned across grades K through 8

  • Provide oversight and implementation of academic vision and priorities

  • Provide oversight over key school leader actions including school staffing model, hiring/firing, and overall school calendar (days per year, hours per day, # of short days)

  • Oversee and implement the school review process

  • Support the professional development of school leaders and the staff at large; oversee professional goal setting for and evaluation of school leaders, teachers, and instructional support staff

  • Develop and maintain structured and consistent academic, instructional, and behavior management systems

  • Ensure implementation and alignment of PAVE Schools curricular programs, proprietary and state assessments, data management, and other academic/student systems

Operations & Fiscal Management

  • Oversee the Senior Operations Leader to ensure high-performing school-level operations, technology, reporting and compliance, data and analytics, and family and community engagement

  • Serve as chief liaison to SUNY Charter Schools Institute, leading all contract negotiation and relationship management efforts

  • Work in concert with consultants and staff to ensure the smooth functioning of the Finance, HR and Talent functions

  • Oversee all school and building space planning and capital improvements

In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Executive Director candidate will be/will have:

  • A leader strongly committed to PAVE’s mission and vision

  • A proven instructional leader with experience running a high performing school, who is knowledgeable about best practices in K-8 programs

  • A seasoned professional and experienced manager who knows how to recruit, coach, and develop teachers, staff, and leaders at all levels

  • A passionate advocate for all students and families; committed to building a strong culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion at PAVE

  • Exceptional in their ability to build efficient processes to ensure cross-functional communication and collaboration

  • Seasoned management experience in non-profit business operations, with a strong preference for prior experience in charter schools with a matrix management structure

  • Strong general management skills with direct line, dotted line, and contracted team members

  • A relentless work ethic, a high degree of patience, and grit to push through difficult challenges

  • Strong judgment and decision making

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; relevant graduate degree strongly preferred
