Police Athletic League Lead Teacher in Brooklyn, New York

The Police Athletic League (PAL) is the largest independent youth organization in New York City that provides educational and recreational activities for children and young adults. PAL Inc. and The New York City Police Department work in partnership to provide communities with summer and after-school recreational and educational activities.

We are looking for a Lead Teacher who will be responsible for supervising a given group of children in cooperation with the Assistant Teacher and any volunteers assigned to the classroom. The successful applicant will have the ability to establish and maintain professional relationships and a sound educational program; to be articulate, pleasant, and resourceful.

This position is available in Coney Island, East New York, Brownsville Locations - Brooklyn

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Plan and implement ongoing curriculum for 3 and 4-year-old children in group and individual settings

  • Act as a lead member of an educational team in planning and delivering Head Start services in the Center

  • Responsible for ongoing assessment of children.

  • Comply with record keeping requirements

  • Maintain knowledge of agency educational policies and practices by attending in-service training as provided.

a) Center Relationship:

  • Be aware of the job role as it relates to the rest of the center staff

  • Be able to work as part of the center team as well as the agency team

  • Know and utilize proper channels

  • Be aware of center and agency educational goals, objectives, and philosophy

  • Be aware of the job role as it relates to all service areas in HSPS

b) Personal Capacities Essential for Child Development:

  • Be warm and supportive of all children

  • Appreciate the strengths of individual children and assist them with reaching their full potential

  • Highly tuned to the non-verbal cues when children interact.

c) Set Up and Maintain a Safe and Healthy Learning Environment:

  • Know the purpose and use of classroom and outdoor equipment and materials

  • Develop appropriate curriculum and materials for the classroom and for outdoor play

  • Maintain a positive, safe and orderly classroom environment and be aware of how to provide flexibility to meet the needs of each child.

d) Advance Physical & Intellectual Competence:

  • Provide a model for children, for example: speech, body contact and behavior.

  • Maximize conversation with children to stimulate curiosity and promote language development.

  • Encourage children to discover answers to their questions by sharing materials and experiences.

e) Build Positive Self-Concept and Individual Strengths:

  • Find opportunities to help children develop self-confidence.

  • Cany out positive classroom disciplinary techniques.

  • Develop knowledge of age-level characteristics of preschool children and a respect for individual differences.

f) Organize and Sustain The Positive Functioning of Children and Adults in a Group/Learning Environment:

  • Composition of quality lesson planning

  • Contribute to the ongoing planning of the program and assist in the implementation of those plans.

  • Know and assist in the carrying out of the established daily schedule.

  • Be able to delegate the organization of small group activities

  • Responsible for the supervision of the total classroom

g) Home and Center Coordination:

  • Be able to transfer parent goals and expectations into established classroom goals

  • Establish effective communication between home and center

  • Organize and execute Home Visits and Parent-Teacher conferences

  • Encourage parent participation in the center and classroom

Additional Responsibilities

  • Knowledge and adherence to Head Start Performance Standards

  • Participate in maintaining required ongoing records of children

  • Know Personnel/Union Policies of your center related to absence, lateness, sickness, and etc.

  • Know center procedures for handling emergencies, for example: fire drills, late pickup and accidents

  • Attend staff meetings, committee meetings, training sessions and parent meetings when applicable

Skills/Knowledge Required

  • Minimum BA Degree in Early Childhood Education (will be placed on a Study plan).

  • Master's Degree in Early Childhood Education preferred.

  • NYS Certification in Early Childhood (Nursery-6) Knowledge of Creative Curriculum a plus.

  • Knowledge of child development and early childhood education

  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of children's independence, social competence, complex inner lives, and increasing ability to adapt to their environment and cope with stress.

  • Knowledge of computer programs (Microsoft Word, WordPerfect for Windows, Microsoft Excel) preferred or a willingness to learn

  • Bilingual Preferred

  • Must be a team player and MUST love children

  • Become Interrater Reliable with Teaching Strategies within 6 months of hire.
