New York University Visiting Assistant Professor in Brooklyn, New York

The Integrated Design & Media Program in the Department of Technology, Culture, and Society at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering invites applications for a full-time, visiting faculty position in Integrated Design & Media, at the level of Visiting Assistant Professor, with a start date of September 1, 2023. The position will be for one academic year.

Practice

We seek candidates with an active, hands-on art or design practice whose work engages with extended reality (XR) and other emerging media technologies in relation to equity and community engagement, through activism, advocacy, design justice, or other strategies that broaden participation in emerging technology. This position will complement and strengthen our commitment to delivering a robust curriculum that is inclusive of diverse and critical perspectives, applications, and sites in digital art and design practice.

The program welcomes candidates with a diverse or hybrid background (e.g. degrees in engineering and arts, humanities, or design) and whose practice includes exploring themes of gender, race, labor, accessibility, and other crucial issues of societal context (bias, surveillance, authorship) within emerging technologies such as:

XR (VR, AR, mixed reality)

Motion capture / spatial computing

Themed entertainment and experiential storytelling

Synthetic media / creative uses of machine learning

New interfaces for human-computer interaction

Open source workflows and tools for the above

We strongly encourage candidates whose work engages with or has had a demonstrable impact on diverse communities to apply.

The successful candidate should be an excellent teacher with a strong commitment to student mentorship, prepared to teach undergraduates and Master’s students. Teaching requirements include core courses for the program as well as special topics courses within the candidate’s area of expertise. Candidates can expect to teach two courses per semester in addition to departmental service assignments and continued art/design/research practice. The Integrated Design & Media program offers BS and MS degrees in Integrated Design & Media.

Candidates must have a graduate degree in digital media, design, or related fields (art, design, engineering).

Additional Information

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary (for 9 month) range for this position is $70,000 - $125,000.
