Title: Counselor for the Upward Bound Program

FTE: Full Time

Location: Buffalo, New York

Annual Starting Salary: $42,500

The Upward Bound Counselors primary responsibility involves planning, developing, implementing and evaluating program activities, counseling, tutoring and advising focused on students' successful graduation from high school and career readiness. The Upward Bound Counselor will work with students, program alumni, teachers, counselors, the school district, community stakeholders and parents, and will provide college advising and educational opportunities such as field trips and campus visits to students and parents in their partner school. In addition, the coordinator will conduct summer enrichment activities in accordance with TRIO regulations. Additionally, you will be responsible to keep records of the numbers and demographics of students, teachers, and parents served in all of these efforts.

  • Assist the project director in the design and implementation of program goals and objectives.

  • Assist the project director with the program evaluation process.

  • Disseminate information concerning the Upward Bound program goals and activities to target schools, appropriate agencies, and program applicants and their parents.

  • Maintain communications with the target school liaisons.

  • Plan and implement group conferences and individual meetings with participants to clarify interests and goals; administer and interpret career assessments; provide effective career guidance.

  • Prepare monthly reports on all aspects of the program.

  • Assist in the production and distribution of the per semester newsletter and website.

  • Design and conduct workshops in career awareness, financial aid, college admissions, and self-esteem.

  • Consult the school guidance counselors/liaisons and service agency caseworker to coordinate counseling activities for participants as needed.

  • Assist participants with the completion of college admissions, SAT/ACT, and financial aid forms.

  • Coordinate follow-up, referral, and/or program exit for participants who enter college.

  • Maintain all program documents, forms, reports, correspondence, and other appropriate materials and data.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required/ Master’s preferred in related area and/or equivalent experience

  • 3 + years of experience working with educational equity programs serving a diverse student population

  • Strong knowledge of up-to-date information on K-12 and higher education policies and issues. Ability to assess their impact on program strategies

  • Significant experience advising and supporting educationally disadvantaged students regarding postsecondary opportunities and careers

  • Strong knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements

  • Demonstrated cultural awareness with respect to race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status

  • Strong communications (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills

  • Demonstrated organizational and program coordination skills, including the ability to set priorities and work on several projects simultaneously

  • Knowledge of K-12 and higher education institutions, admissions and financial aid requirements, and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts

  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of youth and adolescent development theory, including issues facing low-income, first/ generation urban youth

Travel Requirements

  • Transportation to Target Schools

  • Required to travel with students on field trip and activities
