Brief Job Description

The Modern and Classical Languages Department at Buffalo State, State University of New York, seeks candidates for the position of Assistant Professor 10 Months (tenure track) in the area of Spanish Literary Translation to begin in August 2020.

The appointee will teach three courses per semester for undergraduate or graduate students from the following areas: Peninsular and Hispanic American civilization and literature, with emphasis on the former, plus additional courses in Spanish languages at all levels, while working to develop a graduate-level online certificate program in translation and interpreting. The appointee will also guide the department in further developing language specialist program directions within the framework of the SUNY-approved World Language Advantage Certificate pathways.

The appointee also will engage in scholarly research and creative activity, advise students, and participate in department, college, and community service.

Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Translation Studies by start of appointment, with significant background in Spanish and Latin American literatures, OR a Ph.D. in Spanish and Latin American literatures, with significant background in translation studies; native or near-native fluency in both Spanish and in English; evidence of scholarship or ability to do scholarly research; experience with translation pedagogy; evidence of capacity for curriculum/program development.

Preferred Qualifications

Prior experience in teaching “Languages for Specific Purposes” courses; ability to teach courses both Peninsular Spanish and Latin American civilization and literatures (Peninsular preferred); ability to teach a variety of Spanish courses, across all levels, plus courses in translation; experience with computer-assisted language learning, including blended to fully online instruction.
