The successful candidate will work in partnership with Engineering Leaders and other Firm leaders to develop, support and implement key practice initiatives that advance an innovative engineering practice in line with the firm's strategic plan. Contributes to the success of the firm as a whole, focusing on Electrical Engineering design, technical practice, quality process control, the optimization of resources, staff development and the growth of the group.


Discipline and Practice Leadership: Focus on the benefits and value of truly integrated design, reinforce cross collaboration of disciplines, discuss and generate new ideas and innovative approaches that differentiate CannonDesign and help solve our client's greatest challenges.

The visibility, profile and reputation of the firm, its leaders and all CannonDesign employees are of the utmost importance. This role is a strong voice for the Engineering practice that promotes the firm and our work. Discipline leaders shall anticipate writing one externally published article and speaking at one event per year at a minimum. This role shall actively participate in at least one professional society related their field.

Drives collaboration and integration to obtain successful results including the quality of the design work, process improvement, innovation and profit goals. Facilitates and maintains a regular rhythm of proactive internal communication with your discipline.

Establish and continually benchmark discipline design standards, unify firm wide deliverable consistency, and promote continuous improvement toward industry best practices.

Sets, implements, and monitors achievement of technical and quality-related practice goals.

Develops and executes a plan to have regular (at least monthly) internal and external marketing outreach (emails, newsletters, intranet, website, social media, etc) in collaboration with the Marketing and Communication department.

Leads resolution of potential discipline specific issues involving clients, team performance, design matters, etc. recommending solutions and engaging in conflict resolution. Coordinate with other senior leaders as required.

Serves as a Client Leader when appropriate and as a subject matter expert to both execute and secure work, as well as assist other teams in securing work.

Engages in efforts to expand our prime engineering practice in addition to our traditional integrated A/E practice.

Demonstrates success at negotiating and securing new assignments on major projects.

Reviews proposal drafts and provides guidance as needed. Establish timelines for proposal preparation and clarifies necessary content.

Understands client developmental needs; establishes and maintains professional relationships with clients; orchestrates changes in response to changes in clients' stated needs.

The expectation is that 60% of time will be spent on billable, client-facing, project work. The remaining 40% will be spent on business development and other tasks associated with forwarding our practice.

This position will require travel in order to establish relationships with the electrical engineers and other leadership across the firm.

Staff Management and Development: Lead by example. Mentoring and growing emerging professionals is an important responsibility for all leaders at CannonDesign. Assist in establishing an environment that exemplifies leadership, integrity, humility, respect and responsibility, along with collaboration, experimentation, innovation, quality, creativity, and entrepreneurship. Be a strong proponent of interdisciplinary design integration.

Work with Office Engineering Leaders (OELs) and Office Discipline Leaders (ODLs) relative to staffing, skills assessment, recruitment, and professional development to help develop high performance teams. Staffing efforts must be a collaboration between OELs and firm discipline leaders.

Oversees the identification of staff members' developmental needs. Reviews departmental evaluations and selects individuals for further training and/or advancement.

Motivates and provides ongoing mentorship and constructive feedback to the team.

Evaluates and attracts candidates for new positions in department or the overall firm.

Completes performance reviews. Helps oversee the entire performance review process including dissemination/collection of reviews, and the provision of feedback. Participates in the design of tools/programs for evaluation.

Develop an education plan relative to the discipline. Work with the Human Resources to develop content that is available in our internal CannonDesign Academy. Encourage our younger engineers to help develop this content.


Qualified candidates must have a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or Architectural Engineering (Electrical Systems focus).

Minimum of 15 years of related experience. PE and LEED accreditation is preferred.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential as well as the ability to work on multiple projects.

Ability to drive solid process improvement and business results.

Ability to lead, influence, mentor, and demonstrate good judgment.

Proficiency in Revit, AGI, SKM, and Microsoft Office Suite preferred.

Travel to offices, up to 50%.

The salary range for this position is $165,000 to $180,000 annually. This salary range is the range we believe is the anticipated range of possible base compensation at the timing of the posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the anticipated salary range for the position. Employees may be eligible for discretionary bonuses.
