Position Summary:

The University at Buffalo School of Law ( invites applications for a Family Violence & Women’s Rights Staff Attorney position, to commence as soon as possible. The successful candidate will assist with supervision in a clinic focused on family law, domestic & family violence, and areas within the scope of custody and support, alongside a law school faculty member. This position offers attorneys with an interest in family law the opportunity to engage in a multifaceted practice that works in support of survivors of domestic and family violence.

Primary Responsibilities of this position include:

  • Aiding in the supervision of second- and third-year law students’ work on client matters;

  • Providing direct legal support to local survivors of DV and IPV ;

  • Covering matters during the summer and inter-semester breaks, with assistance from law student interns.

  • Assisting with the planning and teaching clinic seminar classes (when needed); and

  • Conducting outreach in Western New York and surrounding regions in order to build the clinic’s docket.

Typical matters handled are likely to include family offense petitions, child support, custody, visitation, and divorce cases. The Staff Attorney will be integrated into the Clinical Legal Education program and will be welcome to participate in the vibrant intellectual life of the School of Law, including faculty workshops, academic conferences, and other events. Support will be provided in preparation to continue their career at public interest organizations, private law firms, in-house positions, or other settings.

This is a full-time, non-tenure track position on a 12-month basis with the renewal up 2 additional years, with the possibility of continuing depending on funding available. The Clinical Staff Attorney will receive benefits. The Staff Attorney will be joining a clinical program whose mission is to deliver access to justice while teaching UB law students to be excellent, ethical, and engaged lawyers.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree of Laws (LL.B. or J.D.) plus admission to the New York State Bar or be eligible to be admitted on motion, without examination, (see Judiciary Law § 90 [i][b]; 22 NYCRR 520.10) in order to independently supervise law practice by students.

  • Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.

  • Requires a certain degree of creativity and latitude.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Candidates should have at least one year of relevant practice experience; prior experience handling family law cases or similar matters in state or family court.

  • Candidates should have an interest in family law, including: family offense, child support, custody, and visitation, with an emphasis on working with survivors of family/ domestic violence and their families

  • Candidates should have strong written and oral communication skills, as well as an interest in and aptitude for teaching and supervision.

  • Candidates should have a demonstrated commitment to public interest or pro bono legal work; and the ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
