About the Graduate Development Program

National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) ( is an in-depth training and development program for high achieving recent college graduates who aspire to take on future leadership roles in a dynamic, ever-changing industry. Graduates are the future of National Grid. Bringing fresh thinking, new perspectives and enthusiasm to our team, we’ll give you real responsibility and an opportunity to make an impact from day one – putting the power to supercharge your career in your hands.

Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an in-depth Orientation which gives you exposure to all part of the company, allows you to network with your Graduate cohort, GDP alumni, and senior leaders, and provides you with the opportunity to travel throughout our service territory in the northeast US. Following Orientation, Graduates begin working in their hired position and take part ongoing development activities through your first year including monthly development sessions, active mentorship, and a Capstone Project at the completion of your first year with National Grid.

National Grid is aiming for an in-person GDP experience for Summer 2022. However, we will continue to monitor the impacts of COVID-19 and will shift to a virtual program if necessary, in order to honor our commitment to our young talent pipeline.

About the Position

To be responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of facilities through the supervision and organization of assigned operations to effectively and efficiently accomplish job tasks in line with departmental and National Grid requirements.

Key Accountabilities

  • Support the Manager and Senior Supervisors in coordinating the daily activities of assigned internal crewsand/or external contractors performing construction, maintenance and restoration work associated withelectric utility Transmission, Distribution, Substation or Civil construction. Work in unison with otherNationalGrid departments to ensure a seamless transition of work.

  • Monitor job progress, document crew activities and prepare reports.

  • Assure that high standards of safety, security and environmental compliance are consistently followed atassigned work locations.

  • Fully understand the assigned project scope and or contract work authorization details. Interface withothers on the project to ensure job commitments are delivered on time and within budget.

  • Ensure safe and reliable construction and maintenance activities consistent with company, objectives andpolicies, in full compliance with existing and relevant emerging government codes and regulations.

  • Ensure company guidelines and procedures, standards, and environmental and safety regulations areconsistently adhered to. Assure compliance to all applicable Federal, state, local and National Gridguidelines, laws and regulations.

  • Provide quality assurance that the work being performed is per National Grid specifications, standards and applicable contractual documents.

  • Work with other supervisors and departments to review engineering drawings, technical specifications. Survey site locations for constructability considerations, confirm proper permits and licenses are availableprior to work start and attend project meetings as requested.

  • Document internal and or contract crew activities, prepare and present periodic oral and written updatereports and verify the accuracy of contractor invoicing as required. This will include ensuring adherence tocontract documents to completion and monitoring change orders and reasoning. Report on job progressutilizing a web-based reporting database.

  • Adhere to company operating procedures.

  • Ensure successful performance of assigned internal and or contract crews and help to encourage a"continuous improvement" field work environment within a performance based culture.

Supervisory/Interpersonal- Experience Required

  • Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience in managing a team with the ability to build effective, respectful, working relationships.

  • Coach, motivate and lead a team of operating and maintenance personnel and increase their capabilities.


  • Bachelor or Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Electrical, Civil, Structural Engineering, Construction Management preferred

  • Graduated between May 2021 and June 2022

  • Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program May 31, 2022 or June 27, 2022

  • Valid US driver’s license

  • Proven leadership experience (e.g., student government, clubs, athletics) or volunteering experience in and/or out of the college environment

  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills

  • Applicants for the Graduate Development Program must have work authorization that does not now or in the future require sponsorship of a visa for employment authorization in the United States
