Position Title Assistant Director of Career Exploration

FLSA Exempt

Primary Responsibilities


The Assistant Director of Career Exploration is a member of the Exploration Team within the Center for Career Excellence and works with team members, academic departments, and key University partners to implement the Center’s early career education and exploration strategy for students.


  • Conduct one-on-one and small group coaching for students; provide guidance and resources for the career exploration process.

  • Advise students on the variety of experiences to enhance connections between college and careers, including participation in Careers 101, LINC Mentoring Program, SLU Connect, Internship Fellowships, Careers 251, and other high-impact experiential learning and research opportunities.

  • Actively develop and utilize knowledge of industry employers, opportunities, tools, resources, and trends to assist students with internship and job search.

  • Assist students with professional documents and answer career-related questions.


  • Plan key programs that facilitate career exploration and networking through alumni volunteer involvement.

  • Work with Exploration Team colleagues, academic departments, and campus partners to build small-scale programs supporting students’ career readiness.

Internal & External Relations

  • Work with assigned campus areas and academic departments.

  • Engage alumni as volunteers to assist students in the career exploration and preparation process.

  • Interact with employers as industry specialists, internship/job sponsors, and program hosts.

  • Help staff SLU Connect career exploration and networking trips to various cities.

  • Actively participate in Center’s evaluation, assessment, and reporting practices.

  • Assist with University special events that may include Admissions Visit Days, Orientation, Alumni Executive Council Weekends, Laurentian Weekend, Board of Trustee Weekends, and Reunion Weekend; participate in additional alumni events as requested.

Professional Development

  • Actively seek out resources and information to stay up-to-date on career services best practices, employer hiring trends, diversity & inclusion, and specific job responsibilities.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities with our member associations; make use of online resources.

  • Attend a yearly professional development conference as office budget allows.

Other duties as assigned or requested to meet departmental goals and objectives.

Minimum Qualifications

Competitive candidates will have a Bachelor’s degree with 1-5 years of experience in a higher education or professional setting.

  • Strong interest in working in college career services at a liberal arts institution.

  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion and experience interacting with individuals from diverse populations.

  • Exposure to strategies for career exploration, networking, resume/cover letter writing, internship/job search.

  • Skills necessary to assess, organize, and prioritize multiple tasks with attention to detail.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills necessary for communicating with small and large audiences.

  • Strong time management, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to develop innovative student programming collaboratively and independently.

  • Aptitude for making decisions using independent discretion and judgment.

  • Success in developing and maintaining professional relationships.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel; Zoom.

  • Ability to travel and work non-standards hours, including some nights and weekends.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with career platforms and assessments preferred; especially Handshake, Firsthand/Vault, CareerShift, Focus2, LinkedIn Learning.
