Position Title Associate Director of Asia and Pacific Programs

FLSA Exempt

Primary Responsibilities

St. Lawrence University invites applications for an Associate Director of Asia and Pacific Programs. Housed in the Center for International and Intercultural Studies and reporting to the Associate Dean of International and Intercultural Initiatives, the Associate Director will work with a team of four to support off-campus study opportunities and international/intercultural programming on-campus, focusing on Asia and the Pacific. The Associate Director will be the principal advisor and administrative contact for a portfolio of programs—including recruiting, pre-departure advising, visa preparation, and as a contact while students are on-site. In addition, the Associate Director will develop and teach two courses per year based on their teaching and research interests. Candidates with a terminal degree may be eligible for appointment as an instructor of practice in a relevant department or program and these appointments are eligible for promotion in rank.

The Associate Director of Asia and Pacific Programs is supported by a generous endowment, with dedicated funds to support teaching, research, study abroad, and internship opportunities in Asia. The Associate Director will help develop these initiatives in Asia by working with faculty and students across campus, with some travel to the Asia and Pacific region required.

International Education Administrative Responsibilities (50%)


  • Promote, advise, and manage an off-campus study portfolio of affiliated programs in Asia and the Pacific during the fall, spring, summer, and/or academic year.

  • Manage a grant funded Freeman ASIA summer internship program.

  • Provide pre-departure support, including program applications, program interviews, orientations, and visa guidance.

  • Serve as a point of contact for students while studying off-campus.

  • Review program evaluations and make strategic recommendations to the Associate Dean of International and Intercultural Studies and Director of Off-Campus study.

  • Maintain MOUs and partnerships with partner organizations.

  • Consult with the Student Safe Travel Committee on issues of safety and security related to portfolio of programs.

  • Collaborate with other staff and faculty through the Center for International and Intercultural studies to support off-campus programs and on-campus intercultural events throughout the year.

Teaching Responsibilities (30%)

  • Design and lead two courses per academic year, depending on research background but ideally related broadly to Asia and/or intercultural education.

  • One of these courses could contain a short-term travel component or be a co-taught summer course with another faculty member to increase student interaction with the Asia and Pacific region.

  • Collaborate with the First-Year Program for outreach to First-Year Students.

  • Design and lead on-campus intercultural programming related to Asia and Pacific regions.

Expanding Asia-Focused Initiatives Across Campus (20%)

  • Develop a strategic plan for Asia and Pacific-focused initiatives.

  • Meet all reporting requirements of grants, including Freeman ASIA .

  • Seek additional scholarships and grant opportunities focused on Asia and the Pacific.

  • Collaborate with International Student Services, academic departments and programs, and AAPI -focused student organizations to support intercultural initiatives, events, and educational opportunities on St. Lawrence’s campus.

  • Support international admission efforts in Asia/Pacific regions.

    Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree

  • Minimum 2 years of experience teaching and/or advising undergraduate students.

  • Significant personal and/or professional experience in Asia (living, studying, and/or working)

  • Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and constituents.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. with research specialty in Asian Studies (research expertise open)

  • Proficiency in second language

  • Familiarity with Terra Dotta, Slate, Colleague, and/or other student information systems

  • Demonstrated experience applying for and meeting requirements for grants.

  • Demonstrated experience planning or leading international education programming.

    Salary Salary range $58,000 - $65,000. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law.
