St. Lawrence University Associate Director of Strategic Communications in Canton, New York

Position Title Associate Director of Strategic Communications

FLSA Exempt

Primary Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Marketing and Strategic Communications, the Associate Director will be one of St. Lawrence’s lead communicators responsible for advancing the national visibility of the University in the marketplace. Providing direct writing support for the University’s president, the position will be responsible for developing compelling and motivating content for both internal and external audiences. The person will be a creative and strategic thinker who can amplify the impact of the content they are developing by finding new, strategic ways to maximize the use of what they create.

In order to ensure the selected candidate is set up for success, this position is based on St. Lawrence’s campus in Canton, New York. Some periodic travel is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree; English, communications, journalism, marketing, history, or other writing-intensive field is preferred

  • 3-5 years of related work experience

  • Excellent writing, grammar, and editing skills, including experience with and knowledge of feature writing, writing for strategic communications purposes and writing for print and digital mediums

  • Proven skills in creativity, analysis, and problem solving, and the ability to evaluate, synthesize, and incorporate ideas and feedback from multiple stakeholders; ability to synthesize complex ideas and concepts into compelling writing

  • Ability to work independently as well as within a team to meet deadlines

  • Experience building relationships and working effectively with and on behalf of diverse groups of students, colleagues, and community members

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with executive level communications

  • Familiarity with higher education or a nonprofit setting
