Duties Description The NYSDHR is the state agency tasked with enforcing New York's Human Rights Law, which prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, credit, and other areas. The division investigates, prosecutes, and adjudicates complaints of discrimination and works to eliminate barriers to equal treatment and opportunity for all New Yorkers.The Summer Legal Intern will work closely with attorneys and investigators at the NYSDHR to assist with legal and investigatory tasks related to discrimination complaints. Interns will gain hands-on experience in civil rights law and the workings of a state agency dedicated to upholding human rights.Key Responsibilities:• Assist with legal research and analysis related to civil rights, discrimination law, and ongoing investigations and/or policy and legislation.• Draft memoranda, reports, and summaries related to discrimination complaints and investigations.• Support attorneys with case preparation, including reviewing and analyzing evidence, witness statements, and legal precedents.• Observe and participate in meetings and hearings, including those related to the investigation and resolution of discrimination complaints.• Prepare written recommendations and assist in preparing case files for litigation or settlement.• Engage in public outreach and educational efforts, including developing informational materials or presentations.• Attend training sessions and seminars to enhance understanding of New York State Human Rights Law and civil rights protections.
Minimum Qualifications • Currently enrolled in an accredited law school, with a demonstrated interest in civil rights, employment law, or public interest law.• Strong research, writing, and analytical skills.• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.• Excellent organizational and communication skills.• Familiarity with New York State Human Rights Law and anti-discrimination statutes is a plus but not required.• Commitment to public service and social justice.
