Scope of Position
- Laser processing intern that can apply engineering principles and fundamental scientific understanding to develop and improve laser processes, or associated equipment, for a variety of Corning materials.
Day to Day Responsibilities:
Modify or create customer laser and optics benches for laser processing per needs of specific projects, implement laser processing of various materials (glasses, ceramics), gather and analyze data.
Development of laser processes and associated hardware to process new materials, new part geometries, or improve precision, quality, throughput, or yield.
Disciplined execution of experiments.
Work interactively with people across all organizations (RD&E and Manufacturing).
Participate on project teams.
Be an active member of the laser processing team, work cooperatively with other engineers and scientists on the team to create process and hardware solutions.

Based in Corning, NY
On-site assignments at manufacturing operations possible
- Ph.D. student in Optical Physics, Physics, Material Science, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related area.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with laser/matter interactions.
Hands-on experience with construction and building of opto-mechanical systems, laser beam delivery, and related design and engineering principles.
Data analysis skills: ability to use the PC to analyze process data and trends to reach conclusions that help solve laser process problems. Matlab programming, Python programming a plus.
Knowledge of statistical analysis tools, design of experiments (DOEs), statistical process control (SPC), and other process control/analysis techniques is a plus.
Industrial Experience: Laser processing experience specific to glass processing, laser processing systems integration is a plus.
Understanding of glass technology is a plus, such as glass compositions/types, methods of glass forming and manufacture, and laser cutting of glass.
Strong interpersonal skills, presentations – effective at interacting and communicating with other members of the laser processing organization or other project participants.
Able to work in a team environment to solve problems or produce a product.
