Minimum Qualifications Applicants must meet the minimum qualifications for the Fish and Wildlife Technician 1 position which are as follows: 30 semester credit hours, including 12 semester credit hours in fisheries; marine resources or wildlife management; mariculture; marine biology; aquaculture; aquatic, marine or terrestrial ecology; zoology; marine technology; botany; limnology; hydrology; or oceanography. Preferred Qualifications: Experience trailering and operating boats as long as 20 feet in length, interacting with the public and identifying salmon and trout.

Duties Description This position is based in Cortland County to work on the Cayuga Lake Angler Survey which monitors angler catch rates and preferences. The survey will run from April 1 2023 through March 31 2024. The technician will work both weekend days and all holidays plus one or two randomly selected weekdays (4 ten hour days per week = 40 hours) with the shift varying seasonally based on day length. The survey will consist of driving a specified route covering multiple boat launches and shore fishing access locations each day while conducting angler interviews. Technicians must effectively interact and communicate with the public, ask questions regarding their angling experience, and accurately record their answers and biological data on fish caught. Processing fish for length, weight, clip and scale samples as available is required. The technicians will be required to work in a variety of inclement weather conditions. Must work effectively both independently and as a team member. Other duties will include, but not limited to preparing gear and equipment, data entry and other computer tasks, plus various Fisheries Technician duties.

Additional Comments Must have a valid driver’s license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain Must be able to work in remote areas. Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.This is a seasonal, hourly appointment with an anticipated end date of 11/30/2023. Program needs and funding will determine actual termination date. Actual work schedule, duties and travel requirements may vary and will be discussed at the interview.
