SUNY Delhi seeks a self-motivated, forward-thinking Service & Repair Assistant (HVAC-R) to join the Facilities Department in the HVAC-R Shop. The Service & Repair Assistant (HVAC-R) performs routine and repetitive tasks in the inspection, maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment. Generally, the Service & Repair Assistants (HVAC-R) work under the supervision of a Service and Repair Mechanic (HVAC-R), or supervisory maintenance position. After incumbents learn and perfect their craft, they may perform journey level activities under supervision or after receiving detailed instructions.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES

A Service & Repair Assistant (HVAC-R) working from oral and written instructions, diagrams and equipment manuals, performs a variety of semiskilled maintenance and

repair tasks including but not limited to the following:

  • Routinely inspects and services heating, ventilation, air-conditioning, and refrigeration equipment according to preventive maintenance schedules and equipment service manuals.

  • Assists a skilled mechanic in the overhaul and major repair of HVAC equipment such as, bearings, shafts, compressors, pumps, and electric motors by performing specific tasks as directed.

  • Installs and assists in the installation of heating, ventilation, refrigeration and air-conditioning units and systems by performing such tasks as mounting compressors, condensers and other components in specified locations; cutting, threading and connecting tubing to inlets and outlets of components; installing control mechanisms and assembling components of systems following written and schematic instructions; testing lines, connections and components for leaks with leak detector and making the necessary repairs; recording temperature and pressure readings from gauges, and adjusting controls to bring readings within limits prescribed by the manufacturer.

  • Services, adjusts or replaces electrical control devices and calibrates them according to specified procedures and specifications.

  • Makes electrical connections for motors, fans, and associated equipment.

  • Performs seasonal start-up and shut-down operations on heating and air-conditioning units and systems to assure efficient and maintenance free operations.

  • Incumbents are expected to perform the more routine and repetitive tasks with considerable independence.

  • Under direction, incumbents participate in work in other Service & Repair specialties when not engaged in HVAC-R work.

  • Records, tracks, and reports preventative maintenance work, findings, and deficiencies.

  • Uses computer to research information such as, diagnostic manuals, specifications, wiring diagrams, and parts related to HVAC-R equipment.

    Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications for the Non-competitive Service and Repair Assistant (HVAC-R) position are:

  • Two-years of full-time experience in heating, plumbing, electrical, steam-fitting, air-conditioning, or refrigeration work under the supervision of a journey level tradesperson; OR

  • Completion of a two-year technical school course in heating, refrigeration, or air-conditioning at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.

  • Unrestricted Drivers License with clean driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 7G Pesticide license, for cooling tower maintenance and treatment, or ability to obtain.

  • EPA Universal Refrigeration Certification or the ability to earn certificate.

  • Experience with the operation of integrated Building Management Systems and PLC's.

    Additional Information:

  • Status: Full-time, Permanent

  • Negotiating Unit: 03 - Operational Services Unit (OSU)

  • Starting Salary: SG-9, $39,022

  • Work Schedule: 6 am - 2:30 pm, 40 hrs/wk, Monday - Friday, but may be sdjusted to include weekend and holiday work to meet the needs of the campus.

  • Reports to: Physical Plant Director
