Job Posting Summary

The C/STEP Career Coordinator/Counselor will work closely with the Director and Assistant Directors to facilitate and help implement all program goals and objectives of the STEP and CSTEP grant. The career coordinator/counselor must have a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, psychology/counseling or related experience. Master’s degree preferred. The position is responsible for the day-to-day operation, career mentorship and research components of the C/STEP programs and those responsibilities include:

Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities:

  • Recruit, determine eligibility, and interview STEP students and CSTEP students classified as Freshman and Sophomore (under 60 credits)

  • Collect program data; Monitor and maintain records of student progress in the C/STEP programs; Maintain the database of students for interim and final reports. Update database with student personal information, grades, assessment, SAT, or regents scores

  • Maintain regular communication with students to ensure engagement with C/STEP initiatives and support services; Assess student academic and personal needs; Keep a record of contacts with the students

  • Provide academic counseling including assisting students in the selection of classes; consulting with students and faculty regarding student performance; integrating academic advisement with the students’ vocational development; help students develop skills to monitor their own course of study; and confer with students concerning long-range academic and career goals. Maintain database of scholarships and internships

  • Provide information to students about career choices and expectation; identifying potential internship sites and helping place students in these internships once sites are established and assuring that students participate in career information events such as Career Day and Day of Service

  • Submit weekly reports concerning program operation to Director and identify weaknesses and propose improvements in the program

  • Organize and conduct academic and professional field trip activities and conferences for students. Must work weekends and occasional overnights

  • Oversee and maintain communication with STEP program assistant coordinators

  • Meet regularly with STEP parents in helping students make the transition to college; consulting with other counselors in the school districts to make referrals; organizing and implementing group counseling sessions based on common student interests and needs; and helping students understand their financial situation

  • Provide information to parents/guardians/students through mail, phone or email on the activities of the STEP program. Compile information for annual handbook, journal and brochures for parents and students. Use C/STEP social media accounts for communication and program activities

  • Coordinate the CSTEP Research Stipend Assistantship Program, collect evaluation forms, create/distribute faculty contracts, maintain records of research hours and goals

  • Assist in designing/organizing the CSTEP Pre-Freshman Summer Program and CSTEP Summer Research Program

  • Develop relationships with on-campus departments to support CSTEP students’ academic and career goals

  • Assist with and perform all duties assigned by the Director

Qualifications

Required Skills & Experience:

  • Must have competent computer skills in Google Suites and Microsoft Office: Word, Access, Excel, and Publisher

  • Must have experience using Argos, Banner, Compass, Extender, Degree Works, and Formstack

  • An enthusiasm for science or math education

  • Good oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate in a respectful, helpful, and friendly tone

  • Previous experience in and dedication to working with students in the target population

  • Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully

    Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, counseling, STEM, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.

    Physical/Other Requirements:

  • Must be able to push, pull, move or lift up to 50 lbs.

  • Must be able to meet all general health requirements for the position as per university policies

  • Available occasional Saturdays during the academic year, Monday-Friday during the summer, and for occasional evening events

The Mercy University Retirement Plan is comprised of two components:

Deferred Compensation Plan

All eligible employees may contribute to the Deferred Compensation Plan on a pre-tax basis upon joining the University.

Defined Contribution Plan

Eligible employees are enrolled in the Defined Contribution Plan after two (2) years of full-time employment at Mercy University and receive a semi-monthly contribution from the College, based on age and salary. If an employee is under age 36, they will receive a contribution of 3.3% of their annual salary each pay period. If an employee is age 36 or older, they will receive a contribution of 9% of their annual salary each pay period.

If employed full-time for two (2) or more consecutive years by another institution(s) of higher education (college or university), without an intervening break in service within the last twelve (12) months prior to employment before joining Mercy, please submit a waiting period waiver form to Office of Human Resources. The Defined Contribution will begin as of the first day of the month following receipt of the completed waiver form.
