OVERNIGHT SUMMER CAMP NURSE

This is a Short-Term Seasonal Position: 1-week or 2-week position leading our health center.

SUMMARY

The Camp Nurse oversees the health and safety of camper participants and staff by operating the Health Center, administering medications, treating illness and injuries, and acting as a liaison to parents, camp staff, and health providers. Processing all medications and supplies related.

YMCA Camp Gorham is a not-for-profit overnight camp, situated on 1,500 acres of Adirondack Wilderness, located on a private 300 acre lake. As part of the Greater Rochester YMCA, Camp Gorham offers campers an opportunity to explore their interests in recreation, sports, nature, and the arts while developing character and friendships. Camp Gorham is co-ed and welcomes campers ages 7-16 for one- and two-week sessions.

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Camp Nurse is responsible for evaluating the health needs of the campers and staff. Nurses must be able to organize medication distribution and make sure that paperwork corresponds. Camp nurses are also responsible for the evaluation of injuries and providing appropriate care when needed.

Camp Nurses arrive on a Saturday and depart the following Saturday. Scheduled workdays range from 7:30 am through 10 pm. There is downtime throughout the day, although the Camp Nurse must be available in case of emergency.

Compensation: $500/week

The position is responsible for ensuring that the mission, purpose, image and core values of the YMCA of Greater Rochester is conveyed.

Camp Tuition Inclusion:

We are excited to share that camp tuition for the children of our Camp Nurses is included as part of the overall compensation package. This means that up to three dependent children of our nurses can enjoy the enriching experience of our camp at no additional cost.

Eligibility Criteria:

To qualify for this benefit, children must be dependents of the Camp Nurse.

The limit is set to three children per Camp Nurse.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Responsible for the supervision of campers and staff within the infirmary.

  • Keep accurate, detailed records of incident reports and other necessary documentation.

  • Provide a safe environment and program for all participants.

  • Is familiar with and carries out emergency procedures, building rules and regulations.

  • Attend all required trainings and meetings.

  • Assume responsibility for leadership and guidance to campers in daily living skills, with special attention to: Camper personal interactions with respect to others; Camper participation in all camp activities; Camper personal growth, self-confidence and independence. Notify Executive Director prior to calling parents.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be at least 25 years of age.

  • Current NYS Nursing Certification (RN or LPN).

  • Must have experience with camp and working with children.

  • Current certification in Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer required; certifications must be valid/current before the first day of staff training and throughout the duration of your seasonal employment. Must renew annually for camp.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Person must possess values consistent with the mission of the YMCA.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs and transport equipment from one location to another.

  • Ability to visibly observe children.

  • Ability to stand for an extended period of time.

  • Ability to demonstrate and lead activities.

  • Ability to hear distress signals even when distracted by noise and activity.

  • Ability to reason, solve problems and make sound decisions even when distracted by noise and activity.

  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, specifically those subject to extreme heat and humidity.

  • Observe and promote safety and security procedures.
