Luminescent Systems Inc. is a division of Astronics Corporation located in East Aurora, NY. Astronics LSI New York is a premiere supplier of aircraft cockpit lighting systems and keyboards and keypads for ruggedized electronic systems. We are a leader in aerospace lighting applications across military, commercial transport, and business jet/general aviation markets.
Summary
As an Engineering intern you will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and contribute to real-world projects and gain exposure to multiple disciplines of engineering including but not limited to design, manufacturing, and electrical. You will work closely with our team of experienced engineers and professionals, learning from their expertise and guidance. This internship will provide you with valuable insights into the aerospace industry and help you develop your technical skills and knowledge by applying classrooms skills and experience in a real-world environment.
Essential duties and responsibilities

Design Engineering:
Provides product design and development assistance to the Mechanical Engineering group through the duties highlighted below as assigned and directly supervised by an Engineer.
Aids engineers with general design tasks for new product development and redesign efforts, such as modeling, material selection/testing, tolerance stack analysis, etc.
Assists in creation of prototypes by coordinating with suppliers, supporting technicians during the build process, creating control documentation, and/or troubleshooting issues
Supports laboratory testing on current or new product via creation of procedural documentation, fixture design, testing (i.e. thermal, vibration), performing associated analyses and documenting all results
Writes technical documentation to define test and qualification procedures, reports, product analysis, and create custom presentations to be shared with management and /or customers
Aids production by supporting operators on the floor with new builds and corresponding with suppliers concerning component issues
Interface directly with other members of the engineering department as well as within other departments within the company and suppliers/customers
Other duties as assigned.
Manufacturing Engineering:
Develops Engineering and manufacturing knowledge through real-world application. Provides product support via process implementation and improvement assistance to the Manufacturing Engineering group through the duties highlighted below as assigned and directly supervised by an Engineer.
Assist manufacturing engineers with production line setup, process improvement, tool/fixture development and troubleshooting.
Learn manufacturing processes in detail, troubleshooting at an appropriate level and involve manufacturing engineers for assistance to correct problems.
Assist in maintaining accurate and clear documentation that proves manufacturing is being carried out in accordance with both internal and external quality systems or regulations.
Apply lean manufacturing principles to eliminate the 8 wastes in the production process.
Perform other tasks and projects that are responsibilities of the manufacturing engineering department. These tasks and projects may be coordinated directly through any member of the manufacturing engineering group.
Other duties as assigned.
Electrical Engineering:
Provides electrical systems and components design and development assistance to the Electrical Engineering including group through the duties highlighted below as assigned and directly supervised by an Engineer.
Develops understanding and knowledge about electrical codes and aerospace industry standards
Aids engineers with general design tasks of electrical systems and components
Assists in conducting testing and analysis to ensure product performance and reliability
Gain exposure to industry-standard tools and technologies
Interface directly with other members of the engineering department as well as within other departments within the company and suppliers/customers
Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
Currently in the process of completing a four-year engineering degree.
0-3 years of related work experience required.
Experience with solid modeling (preferably Creo) preferred but not required
Work Authorization/Security Clearance
Due to federal contract obligations, must be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident

Technical Skills
Competently use Microsoft products, have knowledge of material planning system, and general computer skills.
Reasoning Ability
Able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Possess the ability to identify problems and work towards a solution.
Physical Demands *
While performing the duties of this job the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to pull handles and push buttons. Requirements may also include climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling. The employee must occasionally lift and or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.

Compensation
$21 per hour
Pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
An offer of employment is contingent on successfully passing a drug test and background check, and applicants who do not successfully pass both the drug test and background check will not be considered for employment .
