The Science Technology Entry Program (STEP) provides academic support services and enrichment activities to students in grade 7-12 who show interest and aptitude in STEM or licensed professions across eight Long Island school districts. STEP offers academic programs, enrichment activities and support services aimed at enhancing the skills and competencies necessary for students in grades 7-12 for entry into college-level programs in science, engineering, technology, health sciences and licensed professions.

The Smart Scholars Program (SSP) at Farmingdale State College works with high school students from three Long Island school districts. This program is designed to provide underrepresented students with the unique opportunity to take credit bearing college courses from Farmingdale State College at no cost. In addition to supplemental academic support services, the program also offers special activities to expose students to a variety of college and career options to further pique their interest and motivation for higher education.

Job Description:

The Access Counselor will report to the Directors of the STEP and Smart Scholars programs, who manage multiple NYSED grant-funded programs designed to support the College's mission to promote access and support academic excellence. Collectively, these programs serve over 500 students from local partner school districts. Farmingdale State College (FSC) has a long-standing history of dedicated service toward the mission of providing at-risk students the opportunity for access to college through comprehensive transition and support program services. In addition to taking credit bearing college courses at FSC or satellite locations, our students have the opportunity to receive academic support for high school coursework and testing, participate in a myriad of activities intended to strengthen their interest in and pursuit of higher education, including conducting research and exploring potential college and career options.

The program counselor will be responsible for assisting with provision of student support services that are effective and in accordance with the grant and College policy. This individual will have a wonderful opportunity to make a difference in the lives of young people while simultaneously building their own professional skills. Primary responsibilities include:

  • Participate in program outreach efforts to assist with student recruitment and retention.

  • Provide direct student support services including individual advisement, group workshops, and assist with coordination of special events throughout the academic year to supplement learning.

  • Assist with visitations to partner schools to meet with school liaisons, track student participation, and assist with group workshops.

  • Assist with operation of scheduled Saturday and summer programs that offer college-level courses and career exploration academies. Weekly schedule will be adjusted to accommodate Saturday morning programming, as needed.

  • Assist with the coordination and chaperoning of student field trips, workshops, enrichment activities, events, etc.

  • Communicate with students, parents, and other stakeholders regularly regarding program information, activities, and events.

  • Works with program directors to assist in tracking student participation, progress and conduct outcomes assessment, helping to identify student needs and viable interventions.

    Job Requirements:

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in social services, education, or related field.

  • Experience working within student support services, such as access programs, with historically disadvantaged and/or underrepresented secondary school students.

  • Experience with provision of student support services, such as educational counseling, presenting workshops, and coordinating trips or special events.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Experience working with a diverse student population.

  • Ability to work on Saturday mornings during scheduled programs each semester.

  • Valid drivers license, eligible to drive in New York.

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proficiency in computer systems, including Microsoft Office.

  • Creative, organized, and motivated individual interested in student development.

  • Adaptable and able to work with various constituents, including secondary school personnel, college faculty, community stakeholders etc.

    Additional Information:

This is a full-time Research Foundation position.
