Delaware North Equine Veterinarian, Finger Lakes Gaming in Farmington, New York

The Opportunity

Delaware North Gaming is searching for a full-time Equine Veterinarian to join our team at Finger Lakes Gaming in Farmington, New York. In this role you will be responsible for monitoring the health of equines entered into races at our facility.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all New York State Gaming Commission regulations and procedures are being followed.

  • Performs pre-race examinations to determine racing soundness.

  • Monitors live racing in the paddock and starting gate.

  • Maintain veterinarian records on individual horses with information obtained from pre-race exams, live racing or track requirements.

  • Exercise with good judgement the ability to place a horse on the Vets List, and recommend to the stewards the placement of horses on the Stewards List.

  • If deemed necessary, prohibit any horse considered "unfit" from racing until the horse is back in good health.

  • Follows and observes the racing horses, and examines any mounts which appear to be in physical distress after the race.

  • Assists with the procedures used to control contagious and infectious illnesses to protect the health and safety of horses and jockey.

  • Perform emergency treatment during live racing.

  • Responsible for reporting any illness and injuries.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in New York State.

  • Must have working knowledge of drug testing methods: veterinary medicine as it pertains to horses.

  • Racetrack and thoroughbred experience required.

  • Ability to be licensed by New York State Gaming Commission.

  • Weekends, Holidays and swing shift work may be required.

  • Intermediate computer skills with Windows platform, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, e-mail and Internet.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

  • Exposed to outdoor weather conditions in all seasons, including variable temperatures and wet and/or humid conditions.

  • Noise level may be moderate-to-high.

  • Work around thoroughbred horses.
