JOB SUMMARY:
Adelphi University’s Theater Department invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Acting (Voice) to start in Fall 2023. The candidate will teach courses including Voice and Diction; Dialects; Verse; and Shakespeare. There would be potential opportunities to act as vocal and dialect coach, to direct departmental productions, and to teach additional courses in the candidate’s area of interest.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
We welcome candidates with experience helping students achieve a significant level of improvement in voice, speech, verse and styles of theatre and commitment to establishing a forward-thinking pedagogy for diverse, multifaceted theatre artists.
We welcome candidates who can demonstrate their approaches to questions regarding race and representation in contemporary and classical actor training; and be advocates for diversity, equity, and inclusion in the classroom and the profession.
Faculty are expected to participate in teaching, professional and artistic service, and service to the institution, as well as participation in the day-to-day life of the department.
The candidate would advise and mentor students, assist in providing vocal and dialect support for Department of Theatre productions, maintain a vibrant professional creative or scholarly research agenda, and provide ongoing service to the university and profession.
QUALIFICATIONS:
This position requires a terminal degree in MFA and three or more years of teaching experience in higher education.
Expertise in the voice training methodology of Kristin Linklater is particularly welcome; certification in Linklater Voice is preferred, but not required. Candidates may have experience with other significant voice and speech pedagogies, techniques, and training methodologies, such as IPA, dialect, Berry, Fitzmaurice, or nonwestern techniques.
Demonstrated excellence in teaching verse, Shakespeare, and theatre styles.
An understanding of the changing linguistic needs of the 21st-century actor in an evolving professional and global landscape.
The ability to engage with identity-conscious, culturally sensitive, and inclusive accent dialect teaching strategies is a must.
A record of professional accomplishments as a vocal coach, actor, or director.
Creative experience that centers the voices of varying regional communities.
Evidence of supporting, teaching, and/or mentoring emerging artists in the classroom and the field.
Evidence of successfully promoting an environment that advances diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Demonstrated capacity to apply diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in the classroom, production, and academic community.
Demonstrated capacity to mentor and prepare actors to enter the changing professional world.
Ability to engage in consensus-based collaboration with students, staff, and faculty.

The Department of Theatre offers BFA degrees in Performance and Design/Technology. Our mission is to promulgate high standards in pre-professional education and training in the specific skills of acting and design/technology by providing experiential opportunities through productions, involvement in Kennedy Center College Theatre programming, New York Theatre Workshop summer programming, and through regular opportunities to network with professionals in the field.
