Hobart and William Smith Colleges Assistant Director of Athletic Communications in Geneva, New York
The Assistant Director of Athletic Communications works under the supervision of the Director of Athletic Communications and the Associate Director of Athletic Communications assisting in publicizing the 29 varsity teams, general programs, and events of Hobart and William Smith Colleges Athletics. Duties include managing and enhancing HWS All-Access video as well as recorded video shared on YouTube, Instagram and other social media outlets, generating and distributing news articles and contributing to the maintenance of HWSAthletics.com, and tracking statistics for assigned sports. The individual is also responsible for developing external media relationships and managing media requests for assigned sports.
Manage and enhance live video production on HWS All-Access to create outstanding viewing experiences for HWS athletics fans.
Develop innovative initiatives in new media, social media and multimedia, including video, and assist in creating graphics for social media and other projects.
Aggregate information and generate stories based on team competitive success, student-athletes, coaches and other related topics to inform and engage fans, particularly with time-sensitive information. Stories will take the form of articles, video, social media posts and other new media.
Cover human interest stories that bring HWS fans into the day-to-day-lives of student-athletes, coaches and alums.
Serve as the primary media contact and official statistician for home events for William Smith Volleyball and other assigned sports.
Record in-game statistics using Stat Crew/NCAA Live Stats and maintain historical records for assigned sports.
Game day responsibilities in addition to official statistician duties include managing media requests, setting up equipment for webcasts, conducting postgame interviews with coaches and/or student-athletes and engaging fans on social media.
File required reports with the appropriate conference and national offices.
Nominate student-athletes and coaches for weekly and end-of-season awards for assigned teams.
Develop strong, professional relationships with coaching staff to better support their recruiting efforts.
Willingness to work flexible hours including nights, weekends and holidays along with some required travel.
Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a related field (journalism, communications, sports management, etc.).
The right candidate will be a creative thinker willing to experiment with new ways of communicating about HWS athletics that will engage fans and the media.
Strong written and oral communication skills are a must as well as proficiency with NCAA Live Stats for Volleyball, Adobe Creative Suite (After Effects, InDesign, Photoshop, Premier Pro) and social media (not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube).
Ideal but not required: website content management system by SIDEARM Sports, and basic computer applications along with experience with in-game statistical software (StatCrew).
Experience shooting broadcast-caliber interviews and game footage, and with live streaming technology, will be a significant plus.
This is a 10-month, full-time, benefits-eligible, administrative hourly (40 hours per week) position. Frequent evening and weekend work required. Additional hours will be required on occasion.
