The Field Research Unit (FRU) is the first line of response to faculty, staff and students engaged in agricultural field research. FRU manages all land, field facilities, and equipment used in support of field research. FRU provides basic services for research conducted in AgriTech field plots including but not limited to: site preparation, fertilization, and pesticide applications. FRU provides pesticide management services to all field programs at Cornell AgriTech. Perform the day-to-day responsibilities associated with improving and maintaining farm infrastructure. On an as-needed basis, assist the fruit and vegetable teams with field work including maintenance and research spray applications. Also, as-needed, assist the farm mechanic with equipment maintenance, upkeep, and cleanliness of the shop, and occasional maintenance of Buildings and Properties vehicles. These responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: Operate heavy equipment including large trucks, bulldozers, a backhoe, and excavators to improve and maintain drainage ditches, irrigation systems, fencing, farm roads, retentions ponds, and other farm infrastructure. This includes driving trucks requiring a Commercial Driver License (CDL). Assist with ordering materials and supplies required for tiling, drainage, irrigation, road, and fence projects, land preparation, planting, cultivation, irrigation, discing, plowing, mowing, trellis construction, high tunnel construction. Learn to operate GPS systems on farm equipment. Support farm operation during peak growing season by performing pesticide applications on an as needed basis. Record information on work orders including time and materials used in an accurate and timely manner, as required by the Unit Leader. Attend educational seminars and trainings as required by the university or Unit Leader. Maintain all required job qualifications, certifications, and licenses to fully perform job duties. Formal training beyond a High School diploma of one to two years, two years' college course work, or Associates Degree or equivalent with more than two years' experience in field operations. NYS Commercial Driver's License is required and must possess or be willing to obtain a New York State (NYS) Commercial Pesticide License, category 1A) within six months of employment. Must possess and maintain a valid driver license. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Working knowledge of basic computer programs such as Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. Must be able to wear proper protective equipment to avoid exposure to toxic chemicals, using extreme caution when handling and applying. Must be able to adapt to changing priorities, situations and demands. Work in all kinds of unfavorable weather conditions. Sound judgment, excellent reasoning and decision-making skills, meticulous record keeping and ability to work with diverse personalities. Must be able to work under pressure with a great deal of initiative. Proceed alone on regular tasks, consulting with supervisor on questionable situations. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects. Ability to work well with others is required while creating high-quality and respectful work environment. Must be able to work independently while supporting the efforts of an overall team. Ability to communicate with tact and diplomacy with a wide range of internal and external clients. Must have demonstrated ability to handle sensitive / confidential material in a professional manner. Preferred Qualifications: Associates in Applied Sciences in agriculture with at least 5 to 7 years of experience working with field crops or 5 years of related field experience. Proven successful experience in planning, record keeping, and organization. Ability to make decisions with little direction from supervisor. Demonstrable math and computer skills. Ability to perform and coordinate heavy equipment tasks involving large trucks, bulldozer, excavators, and backhoes as required. Ability to design, layout and order materials and supplies required for tiling, drainage, irrigation, road, and fence projects. Ability to organize/direct/lead seasonal brush chopping/removal in orchard blocks. Ability to monitor weather forecasts and ground conditions to inform work planning and scheduling.
