Cell Culture / Cell Therapy FAS Overview

12 week Summer Internship into building a picture and vision of what it’s like to be a Cell Culture / Cell Therapy Field Application Scientist in a remote field, customer-facing work role.

Internship Description

A cell culture and cell therapy field applications scientist is the primary technical interface between the internal team(s) and the external customers. The primary function of the FAS is to provide technical consulting and troubleshooting for the customer enabling them to identify the best cell culture and cell therapy solutions to meet their technical and project needs. In this role, the CCCT FAS intern will work with multiple a cross-functional team(s) to support the technical needs of our customers. The FAS intern will work independently and in collaboration with the field and commercial team(s) to bring these technical solutions to our customers. Additionally, the FAS intern will play a critical role in supporting Research and Development and Product Management in identifying new product development opportunities. The FAS intern will support customers with cell culture and cell therapy activities related to protein and virus production, as well as potential cell and gene therapy applications. Technical discussions and specific needs will vary based on the customer, but may include, transient and stable cell line development, medium and feed selection and optimization, and process development and scale-up.

  • Schedule and coordinate face to face technical interactions with customers.

  • Lead escalation for advanced regional product and application inquiries; drives resolution with global R&D, Product Management.

  • Lead technical product specification, application and protocol optimization discussions with customers and prospects for complete portfolio of BioProduction Group (BPG) requests.

  • Deliver technical presentations that complement Commercial Sales activities; participate in development of technical presentations with marketing

  • Act as internal expert and recommend technical applications and process development studies.

  • Act as primary field technical interface with the commercial team and the customer focused on Cell Culture and Cell Therapy (CCCT) products and services; lead cross business unit activities (i.e. GEMBA), understanding of bioproduction workflow to effectively communicate Thermo Fisher Scientific capabilities to customers and drive lead sharing opportunities.

  • Lead troubleshooting on issues that arise related to end-user's technical skills, cell line, media and feed selection and optimization, experiment design and interpretation of results for media development/optimization process; document key information to facilitate learning across team; coach other FAS.

  • Provide proactive consulting to customers on workflow improvements

  • Provide effective training activities and workshops on the application and capabilities of CCCT products and systems

  • Develop and deliver training programs and seminars to external customers to increase customer awareness of CCCT products and services.

  • Maintain awareness of competitor activities and innovations within our accounts, and the marketplace generally, ensuring that relevant information is circulated within our organization in an effective and timely manner

  • Participate in key industry conferences; gather knowledge and bring back to team; develop leads for commercial team; where possible, deliver oral / poster presentations; participate on panel discussions.

  • Provide expert technical leadership during sales process by demonstrating superior product and application knowledge.

  • Use market and product knowledge to assist Commercial Teams in developing sales, marketing and customer account sales strategies.

  • Provide competitive product/market reports and regular feedback on customer needs and satisfaction to internal stakeholders (Product Management, Marketing, etc.).

Able to analyze data and collect necessary voice of customer (VOC)

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Currently pursuing a master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, biochemistry, biotechnology, or related biologic field from an accredited institution

  • Completed a minimum of one (1) year of graduate studies by the start of the internship

  • Proven scientific excellence as evidenced by publications and presentations will standout

  • Ability to handle the ambiguity of field based FAS role and flexibility to change direction when unexpected results become available

  • Excellent interpersonal and troubleshooting skills highly vital

  • Strong written and oral communications skills


  • One-two (1-2) years of practical laboratory experience in cell culture is a plus

  • Demonstration of good judgment and tact in interactions with internal customers

  • Strong leadership and networking skills
