Cornell Cooperative Extension Camp Program Assistant - Hamden, NY in Hamden, New York

This position will serve as a Program Assistant at 4-H Camp Shankitunk. 4-H Camp Shankitunk is a traditional summer camp located in Delhi, NY. 4-H Camp Shankitunk operates both a day camp program (ages 6+) and an overnight program (ages 8-16) for youth in the summer and hires approximately 50-60 seasonal camp staff members. 4-H Camp Shankitunk is owned by Delaware County and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Delaware County.

The Camp Program Assistant will provide leadership and guidance for a specific activity or program area at 4-H Camp Shankitunk. This includes but is not limited to developing and implementing lesson plans and activities, coaching and providing feedback to camp counselors with instructional duties within the assigned program area, implementing evaluation and feedback processes, supervision of and and ensuring compliance with camp policies and procedures for camp staff assigned to program area to ensure the program runs safely. Set goals with counselors and foster teamwork to achieve goals. Responsible for ensuring that all assigned camp staff are accounted for during scheduled times. Provide regular feedback to camp counselors. Participate in the general planning of the camp program. Assist with all camp program activities and other camp-wide activities as assigned. Assist in implementing safety and health regulations. Participate in staff meetings and training events as scheduled. Assist with program scheduling and management of camp staff within program area as requested. Responsible for assisting in other camp activities as needed. Assist with skills verification and assessment and offer routine feedback and coaching to camp counselors assigned in program area throughout the summer program in conjunction with Camp Director and Camp Program Coordinators.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old to comply with NYS Department of Health regulations.

  • Experience working with children and conflict resolution.

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.

  • Ability to teach, supervise and motivate staff.

  • Emotional maturity, good health, and vitality.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with campers and other staff members.

  • Willingness to learn.

  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 21 years of age preferred.

  • One year of college (30+ credit hours) and coursework in education, physical education, outdoor recreation, youth development, or a related field.

  • One or more years of experience as a youth camp counselor desirable.

  • First Aid/CPR certification desirable.

  • Experience in or familiarity with 4-H Positive Youth Development Objectives desirable.

    Position Responsibilities and Essential Functions

Program Development – 5%

  • Work with Program Coordinator to investigate and create additional program resources in assigned program.

  • Make suggestions to the Program Coordinator for the development of new activities.

  • Work closely with Program Coordinator to develop educational and recreational program activities.

    Program Delivery – 55%

  • Lead educational activities that engage campers and provide opportunities for knowledge acquisition and skill development.

  • Teach and deliver the existing camp program as defined.

  • Teach innovative camp programs. Utilizing established materials, serving as subject matter resource in discipline, provide standard responses.

  • Interact with camp participants.

  • Utilize a variety of proven educational methodologies.

  • Evaluate campers' abilities and skills in program areas to ensure an appropriate program level and activities.

    Program Evaluation – 10%

  • Continuously evaluate program activities and consult with Program Coordinator to adjust based on evaluation as needed.

  • Prepare written evaluation reports as directed.

Administrative Direction – 5%

  • Work closely with Program Coordinator to plan and schedule educational recreational activities in assigned program area.

Administrative Management – 10%

  • Supervise campers in your assigned program area to ensure safety.

  • Enforce camp rules with campers in your charge by consistently adhering to procedures.

  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities and daily routines.

  • Assist in the supervision of daily routines (wake-up, duties, meals, hygiene, rest, bedtimes, etc.) as needed.

  • Recognize and respond to problems as they arise.

  • Supervise all safety procedures required for assigned activity.

  • Be alert and monitor campers' needs.

  • Discuss camper needs with Camp Director and parents, as appropriate.

  • Support community-oriented camp culture that emphasizes acceptance, cooperation, and empathy

  • Set a good example and role model by demonstrating respect, cleanliness, punctuality, cooperation, caring, sportsmanship, manners, and healthy habits.

  • Show enthusiasm and encourage campers to get involved in all camp activities.

  • Evaluate and provide effective feedback to counselors to improve their performance.

  • Communicate regularly with other Program Assistants, Program Coordinators, and Camp Director to identify areas of concern and possible solutions.

Administrative Coordination/Operation – 10%

  • Instruct campers on emergency procedures as directed .

  • E nsure timely attendance for groups within program area is taken and campers not accounted for are reported immediately.

  • Report hazards, unsafe conditions, equipment, and facilities to the Facilities Coordinator or Camp Director.

  • Document incidents and concerns as directed.

  • Make positive connections with campers and develop meaningful, respectful relationships.

  • Facilitate problem-solving through active listening, guidance, and conflict mediation.

  • Explain all safety procedures required for assigned activity.

  • Determine equipment and supply needs and submit them to Camp Director or designee.

  • Prepare space, equipment, and materials for daily activities in a manner that optimizes camper motivation and learning.

  • Assist with weekly overnight and day camp drop off and pick up; parking duties, health check-ins, or other duties as assigned.

  • Answer parent questions for day camper and overnight camper drop-off and pick-up.

  • Complete reports and maintain accurate records as directed.

  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and meetings.

  • Maintain a clean, neat, and orderly program space.

  • Maintain program equipment in a safe condition.

  • Maintain inventory of program supplies and equipment.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with and follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

    Position Details

This is a full-time, exempt, temporary position that will run from June 1st - August 9th. The salary will range from $2,550 - $3,400. Salary is commensurate with experience, certifications, responsibilities, and availability.

The position will work at 4-H Camp Shankitunk in Delhi, NY. On-site residence during program preferred. Overnight accommodations provided upon request (Sunday-Friday). Meals provided. Age 18+ required. Age 21+ preferred.
