Cornell Cooperative Extension Program Coordinator for Day Camp - Hamden, NY in Hamden, New York

This position will serve as the Program Coordinator for Day Camp at 4-H Camp Shankitunk. Camp Shankitunk is a traditional summer camp located in Delhi, NY. 4-H Camp Shankitunk operates both a day camp program (ages 6+) and an overnight program (ages 8-16) for youth in the summer and hires approximately 50-60 seasonal camp staff members. 4-H Camp Shankitunk is owned by Delaware County and operated by Cornell Cooperative Extension Delaware County. The Health Office Coordinator is responsible for implementing all medical requirements described in the camp safety plan submitted to the Department of Health and ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal laws.

The Program Coordinator for Day Camp provides administrative leadership for day camp counselors/staff and campers and ensures that Day Camp runs safely. This position must lead drop off and pick up each day (including sign-in and out sheets), lead Day Camp orientation, oversee integration of Day Camp participants into main camp events such as cook-out, and float during cabin activities to assist overnight staff with the needs of Day Campers. Develop and coordinate day camp activities during cabin time, lunch, rest, etc. Set goals with day camp counselors and foster teamwork to achieve goals. Facilitate staff meetings to share ideas, delegate tasks, and ensure clear communication within the unit groups. Responsible for ensuring that all unit members are accounted for during scheduled unit times. Provide regular feedback to the Day Camp Counselors and senior administrative staff. Participate in the general planning of the camp program. Assist with all camp program activities and other camp-wide activities as assigned. Assist in implementing safety and health regulations. Participate in staff meetings and training events as scheduled. This position is also responsible for administrative duties, including cabin assignments, parent communications, and photocopying schedules and rosters each week.

Required Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years old to comply with NYS Department of Health regulations.

  • Experience working with children and conflict resolution.

  • Strong organizational and leadership skills.

  • Interest, knowledge, and skills in the specific program area.

  • Emotional maturity, good health, and vitality.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with campers and other staff members.

  • Willingness to learn.

  • Ability to meet travel requirements associated with this position.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 21 years of age or older.

  • One year of college (30+ credit hours) and coursework in education, physical education, outdoor recreation, youth development, or a related field.

  • One or more years of experience as a camp counselor.

  • First Aid/CPR certification.

    Position Responsibilities & Essential Functions

Program Development – 5%

  • Work with Camp Director to research and develop additional program resources/opportunities.

  • Encourage participation in all camp activities including games, singing, class, meals, etc.

  • Arrange for use of Camp Facilities such as Ropes, Pool, Craft Hall, etc. for Day Camp.

  • Observe relationships and counsel campers where differences need to be reconciled.

  • Talk with new campers to help them understand the joys and requirements of camp life.

  • Lead discussions in camping skills, personal health and hygiene, ability to get along, etc.

  • Promote proper conduct, encourage common courtesy, maintain order during meals.

  • Promote a quiet, but engaging, rest period.

  • Promote positive energy through encouragement of counseling staff and CITs.

  • Work with Camp Director to implement camp behavior discipline policies as needed.

    Program Delivery – 55%

  • Lead educational activities that engage campers and provide opportunities for knowledge acquisition and skill development.

  • Support all-camp activities.

  • Teach and deliver the existing camp program as defined.

  • Teach innovative camp programs. Utilizing established materials, serving as subject matter resource in discipline; provide standard responses.

  • Interact with camp participants.

  • Utilize a variety of proven educational methodologies.

  • Evaluate campers' abilities and skills in program areas to ensure an appropriate program level and activities.

    Program Evaluation – 10%

  • Continuously evaluate program activities and consult with Program Director to adjust based on evaluation as needed.

  • Prepare written evaluation reports as directed.

Administrative Direction – 5%

  • Work closely with Camp and other leadership team members to plan educational and recreational program activities and training for staff.

  • Support day camp counseling staff to keep morale high and attitudes positive.

  • Coordinate and direct staff meetings with Day Camp staff.

  • Supervise and/or direct counselors and CITs assisting in the Day Camp program.

  • Supervise Day Camp meals, trips, emergency drills, and crisis management situations.

  • Provide thoughtful reflections and feedback on counseling staff throughout the summer .

  • Communicate with kitchen staff when additional / diverse snacks are needed.

  • Be present at camp activities when available (meals, flag, vespers, snack, campfire, etc.).

  • Be flexible and ready to help as other responsibilities emerge.

  • Be a calm, quick thinker in emergencies.

Management – 10%

  • Supervise Day camp staff and provide constructive feedback, always to ensure safety.

  • Enforce camp rules with campers in your charge by consistently adhering to procedures.

  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities and daily routines.

  • Actively supervise the daily routines of wake-up, chores, meals, camper hygiene, rest, and bedtimes, as applicable.

  • Recognize and respond to problems as they arise.

  • Supervise all safety procedures required for assigned activity.

  • Be alert and monitor campers' needs.

  • Discuss camper needs with Camp Director and parents, as appropriate.

  • Support community-oriented camp culture that emphasizes acceptance, cooperation, and empathy

  • Set a good example and role model by demonstrating respect, cleanliness, punctuality, cooperation, caring, sportsmanship, manners, and healthy habits.

  • Conduct both a Camper Orientation and tour of Camp on the first day of Day Camp.

  • Contact parents of campers who have not arrived by the end of check-in time period via telephone.

  • Contact parents of campers who have not departed by the close of check-out period via telephone.

  • Ensure that health and safety plan considerations are implemented in Day Camp.

Administrative Coordination/Operation – 10%

  • Instruct campers on emergency procedures .

  • Take attendance frequently for assigned groups of campers and report any campers not accounted for to Supervisor immediately.

  • Explain camp and cabin rules to campers in your charge.

  • Report hazards, unsafe conditions, equipment, and facilities to the Facilities Manager or Camp Director.

  • Coordinate and assist in preparing required camper health records.

  • Document incidents and concerns as directed.

  • Make positive connections with campers and develop meaningful, respectful relationships.

  • Facilitate problem-solving through active listening, guidance, and conflict mediation.

  • Assist with camper personal and health problems.

  • Explain all safety procedures required for assigned activity.

  • Determine equipment and supply needs and submit them to Camp Director and/or Administrative Assistant for fullfillment.

  • Prepare space, equipment, and materials for daily activities in a manner that optimizes camper motivation and learning.

  • Assist with weekly overnight and Day camp drop off and pick up; parking duties, health check-ins, or other duties as assigned.

  • Answer parent questions for day camper and overnight camper drop-off and pick-up.

  • Complete reports and maintain accurate records as directed.

  • Prepare for and actively participate in staff training and meetings.

  • Maintain a clean, neat, and orderly program space.

  • Maintain program equipment in a safe condition.

  • Maintain inventory of program supplies and equipment.

  • If able, assist with running staff training and Sunday registration days.

  • Cooperate with other Program Coordinators to collect and compile items for archival purposes in “Camp History Binder”.

Professional Improvement – 5%

  • In cooperation with Supervisor and Camp Administrator, jointly develop and pursue a professional development plan to increase competencies relative to position accountabilities and address changes and Association priorities.

  • Collaborate in activities that generally support Cornell Cooperative Extension and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Act as a mature and responsible role model for counseling staff and campers.

  • Interact with camp visitors and parents in a professional manner. (Log after-hour activity).

  • Help provide an atmosphere for developing good morale and well-being among the camp family. Be aware of possible dips in energy, or negative attitudes, collaborate with camp director and core staff to solve issues.

Health and Safety – Applied to all duties and functions

  • Support the Association to maintain a safe working environment.

  • Be familiar with and follow applicable federal, state, and local regulations, Association health and safety policy/procedure/requirement, and standards.

  • Act proactively to prevent accidents/injuries and communicate hazards to supervisors when identified.

  • Attend staff meetings and provide input as needed to improve the Camp community.

  • Maintain an open line of communication between Camp Director and self. If issues or concerns arise throughout the season, report them to the Camp Director, and work towards a positive solution.

  • Conduct assigned patrols of Camp.

    Position Details

This is a full-time, exempt, temporary position that will run from June 1st - August 9th. The salary will range from $3,150 - $4,200. Salary is commensurate with experience, certifications, responsibilities, and availability.

The position will work at 4-H Camp Shankitunk in Delhi, NY. On-site residence during program preferred. Overnight accommodations may be available upon request (Sunday - Friday). Meals provided. Age 21+ preferred.
